Sean’s Mom Was on Target With Job Suggestion

Mom was right. She always is, thank goodness.

Five years ago, Sean Joynes already had a job in a hospital setting, one that he still holds today. But Sean’s mother pointed out that adding a second specifically focused job might tap into even more energy from her son’s compassionate heart. So, Sean joined the award-winning Home Instead® of Philadelphia. Fast-forward to December 2022, when Service Manager Janelle Muhlanga announced Sean had been honored as a Care Professional of the Month. The coveted Home Instead honor just confirmed what Sean’s mother already had known.

“So believe it or not, my mother suggested working as a professional caregiver because she knew how much I love working with the elderly community. I believe she had seen a Home Instead commercial or advertisement, and I applied immediately,” Sean recalled.

“As a result, I have two jobs. I also am currently working in a hospital setting, but it’s actually in a non-clinical role that involves interpersonal skills. While I do have contact with patients and visitors, it’s very minimal when you compare it to my Home Instead Care Pro position,” Sean added.

Perhaps Home Instead clients can feel Sean’s compassion and empathy on the day he shows up to assist them. Those are two of the characteristics that are evaluated when a Care Pro is considered for the employee of the month award. Of course, there are others. Has the Care Pro gone above and beyond the call of duty? Does the Care Pro possess the skills and wisdom to be highly successful? Is the Care Pro exceptional at his work with any client? Finally, does the Care Pro focus on Home Instead’s training, processes and procedures of successful caregiving? In other words, does the Care Pro work at getting better?

For Janelle, General Manager Charlea Lyn Grieco and other staff members, the answers were yes. They all agree: Sean displays Home Instead’s guiding principles of “Build Trust, Take the Lead and Share Your Heart.” Those traits have come naturally for Sean, whose caregiving roots run deep. “I started caregiving for several family members and volunteered when I was in high school at Simpson House senior living,” Sean said.

He said the most rewarding things about his job are putting a smile on someone’s face or making them laugh. “Life is already hard enough, and you never know what someone is truly going through. Being kind and courteous, those are things that do not cost you anything. One day, God willing, I will be a senior, and I would want someone to understand my needs and help me,” Sean said.

He added: “I have worked with many different clients over the years. I assisted one memorable client for a short time when he visited Philadelphia. He was an author, artist, cartoonist and puppeteer who has since passed away. He was so nice and full of life. I knew him from his body of work when I was younger. That really took me back to my youth years.”

Sean loves being a part of the Care Pro team for the Philadelphia franchise, a member of a network comprised of Home Instead, Inc. and its parent company, Honor. With the world’s largest home-care network and the most advanced care platform, Honor and Home Instead are revolutionizing care for older adults, their families and Care Pros. Combined, the network has more than 100,000 Care Pros across 13 countries, meeting the growing needs of millions of older adults and their families worldwide.
