Chris Betsy Head 2023

Betsy and Chris Head, Franchise Owners

When Betsy and Chris Head found Home Instead in late 2000, they both saw an opportunity to own a business that truly made a difference in their community. Both had music and ministry in their backgrounds, and senior care was near and dear to their hearts, as they both had widowed mothers in their 80’s who lived alone many miles away in Georgia. They opened their first franchised office in Roanoke in 2001, and in the fall of 2003 they began caring for seniors in Lynchburg through their second office.

Early on they began to build an amazing team of Care Professionals and Administrative staff, and all became like the large, extended family Chris had grown up in. Betsy started the business, running everything but billing and payroll, which were Chris’s responsibility. Their business quickly grew until they employed nearly 250 Care Professionals between the two offices. As their business grew, their family aged, and Chris lost his mother in 2006 after a brief illness. During a time of decision-making for the five siblings, Chris became the leader as he demonstrated his knowledge and expertise in the care options presented for his mother.

Betsy’s mother lived to the age of 97, and declined slowly through her last decade of life. Betsy and her brother navigated the difficult subjects of helping her accept no longer driving, managing incontinence, negotiating multiple doctors’ visit schedules, and concerns about safety, falls, and nutritional support. This experience fed Betsy’s commitment to care for every client as if they were her own parent.

In addition to their family, which now has expanded to include in-laws and one grandchild, Chris and Betsy are very involved in their communities. Since 2004 Betsy has coordinated the Be a Santa to a Senior program, sponsored by Home Instead, to provide Christmas gifts to lonely, isolated seniors across a seven-county area encompassing Lynchburg and Roanoke. Each year, working with a large team of volunteers, this program provides gifts for about 2000 seniors ages 65 and older. In 2011 Chris was asked to run for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, and he has served the 17th district in this capacity since that time. Chris has taken his passion for serving seniors and his understanding of the complexities of owning a small business, along with his knowledge of the homecare industry, and has become a dynamic member of Virginia’s General Assembly. Chris uses his diverse background to advocate for seniors all across the Commonwealth of Virginia. When they aren't working, Betsy and Chris enjoy spending time traveling, biking, cooking, and playing with their granddaughter. Jesus Christ is their Lord, and they live life seeking to honor God through serving their community.

Terri Williams 2023

Terry Williams, RN, Personal Care Coordinator

Terry was born and raised in Roanoke in a family of nurses (mom, aunts) and has always felt a calling for caring for others and making a difference in their lives. For her, it’s a pleasure to care for older adults and help them remain in their homes. After getting her Nursing degree (Magna Cum Laude!) from Virginia Western in 1997, she worked in ICU, PCU, and the Emergency Department for the next 22 years before joining our team at Home Instead. In her capacity with our company, Terry oversees our Personal Care program, doing client evaluations, supervising our caregiver staff, and managing compliance with our state licensure’s regulatory requirements. She brings a quiet competence and comforting presence to every interaction with our clients, their family members, and our care staff.

Terry has a diverse background and interests beyond nursing. She lived in Anchorage, Alaska for 4 years, and it was here that her oldest daughter was born. Her passions include the Lord, her family, her cat, riding her motorcycle, and marksmanship.

Lenda Liptrap 2023

Lenda Liptrap, Receptionist

In her first career, Lenda managed ITT Federal Credit Union, from which she retired in 2006. After spending 4 years traveling between Kentucky and Ohio visiting her 2 sons and 3 grandsons, she was bored with retirement and decided to rejoin the work force, and the Lord led her to Home Instead. Lenda appreciates the work of caregivers first-hand, having had a caregiver for her mom when the two lived together while Lenda was working full-time. She experienced the peace of mind, relief, and comfort that a caregiver brings to the family whose loved one needs care; she has also personally cared for several family members.

Since joining our team, Lenda has held several positions at Home Instead; initially she was our receptionist and loved the relationship with the staff and caregivers. She later became our bookkeeper and loved that position also.  After a brief hiatus during the COVID pandemic, she returned to the receptionist role. Lenda shares, “I am so thankful to be back with my Home Instead family, as their passion for helping our clients remain in their homes and assisting the families in their needs is truly inspiring.”

Lenda’s other passions are serving God and her church, a highlight of which was a Mission Trip to Cambodia to work in an orphanage in 2006. Her family continues to grow; in addition to her sons and grandsons she now has a 3yr old great granddaughter and a great grandson on the way. Other interests include reading, cats and spending time at the ocean.
