Award-Winning Care

At Home Instead serving southwest Allegheny and Washington counties, we are proud to work with the world's most caring and compassionate people, which is why we are thrilled and honored – but not really surprised -- that one of our CAREGivers, Jennifer Krayvo, was named the 2014 CAREGiver of the Year for the Great Lakes Region by the Home Instead Senior Care network.

Jennifer has been a professional CAREGiver with Home Instead for 11 years, beginning shortly after she finished college. She felt called to the profession, in part, after years of running errands and doing little things around the house to help out her aging grandmother. "I read the job description," she says, recalling the first time she saw the help wanted for CAREGivers, "and I thought to myself, that is exactly what I am doing with my Grandma Krayvo."

In fact, Jennifer's love of learning from older generations dates back to childhood, when she took every opportunity to spend time with her grandparents on both sides. "I loved hearing their stories about the war, and what things were like when they were younger," she says.

Today, she gets the same satisfaction from spending time with her clients, particularly Mrs. Miller, with whom she has formed a special bond during the ten years they've worked together. They first met when the now 91-year-old Mrs. Miller needed a CAREGiver to help her make the transition back home after a hospital stay.

"Jennifer arrived at the hospital with her backpack, wonderful sense of humor, remarkable compassion and amazing insight into how to keep my mom company," says Mrs. Miller's daughter, Pam, who adds that Jennifer has become so much a part of the family that she often attends reunions and other celebrations. "My mom loves Jennifer's kind, thoughtful, anticipatory manner, and her sense of humor – the two of them enjoy laughing together so much."

Jennifer also invites Mrs. Miller to her own family gatherings, and treasures their special friendship, but she feels blessed to be part of all of her clients' lives. "What I have received out of these relationships has been so much greater than I could ever imagine. It's a privilege to be able to step into someone's life and help them in any way you can."

Jennifer appreciates how the flexibility of her job allows her to pursue another one of her passions: photography. As the studio manager at Ingram Portrait Design in Sewickley, she enjoys having yet another opportunity tell people's stories through images.

"Like all of our CAREGivers, Jennifer has a genuine interest in other people," says Lucy Cichon, owner of our Home Instead Senior Care office. "It shows in everything she does and we couldn't be prouder that she has earned this national recognition."
