Home Instead Bowling Green Veterans CareHere at Home Instead Senior Care, we proudly care for our Veterans every day. We believe that our commitment to caring for their needs is one of the most important ways we can show just how much we appreciate their service to our country and protecting our freedom.

1 in 3 seniors in this country is a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran.

These heroes – our fathers, mothers, spouses, and friends – may be eligible for a unique benefit through the VA called “Aid and Attendance.” This benefit provides funding of up to $25,020 a year to help keep loved ones safe and comfortable with home care.

Millions of qualifying veterans and families go without Aid and Attendance – simply because of a lack of information or a lack of help.

Through our partnership with Veterans Care Coordination, we are able to assist qualifying veterans and their spouses to apply for and obtain the Aid and Attendance Benefit through the Department of Veterans Affairs to help cover their medical expenses, including Home Instead Senior Care services.

What makes this partnership unique is the fact that Veterans Care Coordination can offer interest-free loan assistance to clients that cannot afford the up-front, out-of-pocket expense that is required.

Who's Eligible?

  • Veteran, or surviving spouse of a veteran, who served 90 consecutive days of active duty with at least 1 day during a wartime period
  • Veteran did not need to serve overseas
  • Veteran/surviving spouse must have non-service connected medical condition which is not related to military service
  • Veteran/surviving spouse must require assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, medication management and personal care
  • Veteran/surviving spouse can have up to $80,000 in assets based on age/marital status (excludes home and car)
  • Veteran/surviving spouse must meet the Medical Expense-to-Income Ratio (i.e., home care services in place prior to application can count as a medical expense)

The following is a video from NBC Nightly News on VA Benefit Aid and is intended for information purposes.

"As an only child living more than an hour away, I was feeling overwhelmed with the increasing needs of my aging parents.  I began looking at options for in-home care.  After doing a lot of research online and consulting with someone at a senior care resource group, I chose Home Instead.  Both my parents and I were put at ease from our very first consultation and it was such a relief to know that someone understood the position I was in and cared about my parents’ needs.  Still, I was concerned with how to pay for the care.  My budget just did not allow for the amount of care I knew my parents might need.  That’s when my Home Instead representative mentioned Veterans Care Coordination and the Pension with Aid and Attendance benefit.  I had heard about the benefit before and had even consulted an attorney about assistance with applying.  However, I knew the process was long and tedious and I was likely looking at months of red tape before getting an answer.  Veterans Care Coordination made all the difference!  After I gathered some basic documents, they completed my Dad’s application and monitored it throughout the entire process.  Best of all, we were able to start care immediately at no up-front cost to us.  I was amazed when his application was approved in six weeks!  Since that time, VCC has continued to coordinate the benefit and care, staying in touch with the VA, Home Instead and me to ensure care continues uninterrupted.  My parents love their caregiver and my Mom continually tells me how thankful she is to have assistance with so many things they are no longer able to do themselves.  I highly recommend Veterans Care Coordination to anyone who cares for a veteran."

“We have received services from Home Instead Senior Care for the past five months.  My father would not be able to afford care without the assistance of the Aid and Attendance program through Veterans Care Coordination.  My father’s CAREGivers prepare meals, make sure he eats well, bathe and dress him.  It was a hard adjustment for my father at first because he has dementia, and change is difficult; but didn’t take long until he became comfortable with two consistent caregivers.  They do a great job.”

“We have used Home Instead services for a year.  There are limited veteran services in Lawrence County. We were already in the process of applying for the Aid and Attendance pension directly through the VA, but Home Instead and Veterans Care Coordination expedited the process and got it going. We might still be waiting if not for VCC.  My mother’s CAREGivers assist with housekeeping, bathing, meal preparation, medication reminders, and companionship.  I like the fact that CAREGivers come in and do what needs done – they don’t have to ask.  We have really good CAREGivers now.  If you’re having trouble going through the VA, they can help with paperwork. And they really know how to get it through.  We didn’t want to go with a private sitter, because if that person got sick or went on vacation, my mother would have nobody.  I like that Home Instead will send somebody out if a regular CAREGiver is unavailable.”
