Why a Caregiver?

We recently asked some of our team why they chose to become a Home Instead Caregiver. They had various reasons, but there was a common thread...they all mentioned a loved one who at one point or another needed help.  For Kim...It was her Granny...Here is her story.

Kim and Granny.jpgThis beautiful woman is 87 years young!  She was diagnosed in 2012 with Early Stage of Dementia.   In 2013, my beautiful Granny started to decline.  To see a loved one who can no longer remember to do things on their own is heartbreaking.  Showers being refused, names not being remembered, temper flaring and medications not being taken.  All of these things from a woman who was the cleanest, sweetest and most full of life woman I had ever known.

I would spend time with her doing her nails (with wild tiger prints) and she would act like a kid in a candy store, she would be so excited.  My Granny would tell me stories of her and my grandpa's younger years, some accurate and some not so much, but she was happy telling those stories and I loved to hear them.  My Granny passed away in February 2014.  There is not a day that goes by I don't wish I could hear one more story, do one more set of nails for her, trick her into taking her pills or coax her in to the shower.

I became a CAREgiver to be able to provide some of those things to seniors who may not have the children or grandchildren to take care of them or to give their children the peace of mind knowing someone who cares is there for the loved one when they just cannot be.  I now work in the Home Instead Senior Care office as the Service Coordinator so that I can schedule CAREgivers with Clients just like my Granny and make sure they have the best CAREgiver to meet their needs because to me…..It's Personal.
