  3. How to Pay for Senior Care - Aid and Attendance

When you get to the point where your loved one needs care whether it be at home, at an independent/assisted living facility or in a nursing home.  There is a good chance you are going to have to find a way to pay for all of it or at least a portion.  Unfortunately the federal government does not think that many of the services that seniors need are necessary so they are not covered by insurance.

So what are your options?

One option that many people do not know about is a Federal Pension benefit called Aid & Attendance.  According to the VA website:

Benefit Description

VA offers two broad categories of Pension benefit programs:

Veterans Pension: Tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime Veterans.

Survivors Pension: Tax-free monetary benefit payable to a low-income, un-remarried surviving spouse and/or unmarried child(ren) of a deceased Veteran with wartime service.

Veterans and survivors who are eligible for Pension benefits and are housebound or require the aid and attendance of another person may be eligible to receive additional monetary amounts.

Working with the VA is never an easy process so I recommend getting some help from a company who specializes in this topic.  Please note it is currently against the law for any company to charge you for this service.  We use a reputable company called Veteran's Financial.  These are the reasons from their website on why to use them and I totally agree.

Why Choose Veterans Financial?

  • Assistance is always free, there is never a charge to the family, community or care provider
  • Calls are answered by live customer service professionals
  • Regardless of your financial situation, we will assist you with Aid & Attendance
  • 11 years of educating families about VA Pension Benefits
  • Representatives present over 40 workshops every month
  • Strong A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau

We have been recommending and using them for many years and have many happy clients because of their work.  If the senior in your life is a veteran or a surviving spouse of veteran, give them a call today at 800.835.1541.  They will help you through the entire application process!
