 CAREGiver TrainingWashington State Training Requirements

Most caregivers hired after January 6th, 2012 must meet new Washington State training requirements. These training requirements lead to your certification as a Home Care Aide (HCA) by the Department of Health (DOH). You will become a professional caregiver with a certification recognized, and required, by any care provider in the state.

Training Exemptions:

You may be exempt from these new training requirements if any of the following apply:
  • You worked in Washington as a long-term care worker (caregiver) between 1/1/2011 and 1/6/2012 and completed all required training in effect on my date of hire for that job, however this exemption is lost if you stop working as a caregiver for three years.
  • You are a RN, LPN, nurse technician, ARNP, CNA or HCA, with an active credential (certificate or license) from DOH.
  •  (Less common) You hold an active credential from DOH as a certified counselor, speech language pathologist or audiologist, occupational therapist, or physical therapist;
  • You are in a training program to become credentialed in a category listed above
If you do not meet one of these exemptions to the new training, Home Instead will help you in the pursuit of obtaining your Home Care Aid Certification.

1. Office Orientation & HCA Certification Application (COMPANY PAYS)

  • Four to five hours of orientation to our company policies and procedures in our Port Townsend office by a member of our staff.
  • We pay you for this training time at minimum wage.
  • Once you receive your background check interim results letter with assigned OCA number, submit an application for certification as an HCA to DOH. We will help you with the application and will pay the $60 HCA certification fee. Must be done within 14 days of hire.
  • Actual certification will come after taking the full 75 hour training course and completing the certification exam.

 2. Online Orientation & Safety Training (COMPANY PAYS)

  • During the office orientation we will set up an online account for you with Cornerstone Healthcare Training, enroll you and pay for the online Orientation (2 hours) & Safety (3 hours) Courses.
  • You may take this training from any computer, but we normally have you take it in the office following step 1 above so that we can assist you with the process and get you started working as a CAREGiver.
  • HCA training is done on your own time. We pay for the course but not your time.
  • If you do not have a computer at home and are unable to access one, you may schedule a time to complete the online training in our Port Townsend office.
  • Once you have completed 1 and 2 above, you may provide care for our clients.

 3. Online & Practical Application Training (SHARED RESPONSIBILITY)

  • Within 120 Days of Hire – Take the remaining 70 hours of approved basic training as required by DOH. This training will be mostly on-line with 12 hours in an outside classroom for hands-on skills training provided by Cornerstone.
  • You will take this training on your own time at your own pace while caring for Home Instead clients.
  • This 70 hour course costs $325 through Cornerstone and can be paid for as each module is taken. You will earn $1 toward this course for each hour you work with a Home Instead client. So if you work 20 hours per week, you will earn the entire $325 cost in about 16 weeks.
  • DON’T DELAY. Start this training soon after your hire date to ensure you finish on time. If you are not making satisfactory progress toward completing the entire course within 120 days, we may pull you from your shifts until you are.
  • If you do not finish within 120 days, you WILL be pulled from your shifts as required by state law.

 4. HCA Certification Exam (COMPANY PAYS)

  • Apply to take the certification exam. You may apply before you complete basic training, but you should be confident you will complete the course before your exam date.
  • Do not apply before completing the skills lab as the schedule for these classes is not within your control.
  • We pay the $115 exam fee. You pay the rescheduling fee if you miss your scheduled exam and the re-exam fee if you do not pass the first time.
  • You must take and pass the certification exam and become certified as an HCA within 200 days of hire in order to continue to care for clients. The exam will include both a computer-based knowledge test and a hands-on skills demonstration.
  • If you do not promptly schedule your exam for a date within 150 days of hire, we may pull you from your shifts until you do. This shorter deadline is necessary because notice of certification does not occur immediately after the exam, and to allow time for a re-exam if necessary.
  • If you are not certified as an HCA within 200 days of hire, you are no longer eligible to work as a CAREGiver until you are certified.

5. Additional Training Opportunities

Once certified, you must complete 12 hours of approved continuing education per year on an ongoing basis to maintain certification.

We also equip you with job-specific skills, like how to complete the Client Journal. This well-rounded training program helps you build your career on a solid foundation.

Our commitment to your success shines through in our ongoing support. Home Instead Senior Care provides you with these CAREGiver resources:
