CAREGiver of the Month Morgan Sizemore will never forget the beautiful scenery, gorgeous blue skies and compelling conversations with her client, an author and artist, during their weekly drives from Anchorage to Wasilla.
"The drives were a great time to talk, and we had amazing conversations. The times with her were such an adventure," said Morgan, who was honored as the November CAREGiver of the Month for Home Instead Senior Care® of Anchorage. "She has a love for life and exuded such positivity. Whenever we got on a topic of interest, we kept talking. My time with her was never boring because she is such a different kind of client. I have never had one like her."
Morgan, who will be taking summer classes at the University of Alaska-Anchorage and would like to become a mental-health therapist, found many intriguing commonalities with the client.
Morgan and the client toured an Anchorage art gallery on one outing. "We talked about what each of us liked and why. It was awesome. I have great memories of that day," Morgan recalled. "While writing a book, she also did the illustrations for it."
As simpatico as the client was, Morgan has also dealt with difficult clients but does not back away from the challenge of gaining their trust and trying to make their days go smoother.
Staff Coordinator Emerald Fuimaono said: "Morgan was staffed with a client who did not like any of the CAREGivers who we were staffing. Morgan went in with a smile on her face and did her job. The client even wrote us a sweet letter about how amazing Morgan is. We are happy to have Morgan as part of our Home Instead Senior Care team."
The client's letter, in part, said: "Morgan Sizemore has been the most professional, consistent, knowledgeable and compassionate CAREGiver. From making meals to reminding me of my meds (it is NOT my strength) to using her intelligence to solve daily little obstacles, Morgan is a quick learner and an authentically kind and considerate CAREGiver who has assisted me through my healing process."
Emerald added: "You can see that Morgan is amazing. She always comes into the office with a smile and is willing to fill in on any shifts on a moment's notice. Her ability to show compassion and patience for her clients truly shows."
Wise and compassionate beyond her years, the 25-year-old Morgan does not become frustrated easily because of her experience. She is a Personal Care Assistant who worked off and on for six years with two other agencies before joining Home Instead on June 8, 2016.
"I like to win over difficult clients, and the secret is meeting them where they are emotionally and loving them there. Once they realize I am there to help them, they are easier to help. Once you connect with them, there is no real trouble," Morgan said.
"You can find the joy in helping a lot of different kinds of people. There is a certain satisfaction from working with difficult clients because I like the challenge. I like to go to work with a purpose. I often left a client's house having known I had grown as a person because of the specific demands I met. In the end, it was a delight to see if I could gain her praise."
Front Office Manager Rose Marie Holliday said: "Morgan's Christian faith speaks volumes because she walks the walk. She is a gentle soul who connects well wherever she is placed. Our seniors and their families enjoy her presence. She is an amazing young lady who is very cheerful and extremely sweet. She has a heart of a CAREGiver."
Recruiter Coordinator Debby Perkins said: "When Morgan Sizemore was hired, I recognized immediately she could be a successful CAREGiver. Morgan was a delight with whom to chat, and I could feel the empathy she would have with clients."
Staff members shared other accolades, saying: "Morgan is a hard worker, sweet person and a steady personality. She communicates well, and is friendly, caring and personable. You can see she loves to interact with people, is attentive and loves to listen to their stories"
While praising the entire staff, Morgan wanted to give a special shout-out to Staff Coordinator Vaosa Tuiolemotu. "I have a unique relationship with Vao because she is diligent in working with my schedule to fill full-time hours. In addition, I need specific hours for three or four days so I can fit them around the daycare hours for my child. Vao works around that unique request and helps me as I juggle life."
