To Us, It's Personal

Why is it Personal to Michael Hooper?

As a child I was constantly in and out of doctor offices due to my congenital heart defects and debilitating headaches.  I learned at an early age that there were wonderful people in this world whose job it was to help others.  I have vivid memories of staff in hospitals and clinics taking extra time with me to make sure I felt comfortable, safe and secure.  I was inspired by these caregivers in my life to pursue becoming a healthcare provider myself.

As a social worker I’ve had the opportunity to give back the compassion and empathy shown to me in my younger years.  I have seen how taking just a few extra minutes with a client or family can help ease their worries and address some of the questions that they have.

While working at Hackett Hill Healthcare as Director of Social Services, my father’s mother, Nana, became ill at home and fell.  She was hospitalized with diagnoses of aortic stenosis and congestive heart failure.  Ultimately she came to my facility for skilled nursing care and rehabilitation.  Unfortunately she had developed an infection that sapped her energy level and caused her to become quite confused, especially in the evenings.  Our family worried about her safety and emotional well being when one of us was not there.

Luckily I knew about Home Instead Senior Care and was able to contact Lisa and Pattie about our concerns.  They were quick to respond to our needs and within a day or two we had a CAREGiver with my Nana at night – sitting with her, listening to her, helping to calm and reassure her.  Sadly she passed away a short time later in the middle of the night, but our family was comforted knowing she did not die alone as her CAREGiver was by her side.  Lisa and Pattie were gracious enough to attend calling hours at her funeral which meant a lot to me and my family.

This personal experience with Home Instead Senior Care has stayed with me over the years.  When I learned about their opening for the Quality Assurance Case Manager, I knew I had an opportunity to join an outstanding team.  Now here I am excited to be contributing to the wonderful service that Home Instead Senior Care provides.
