Mary and David Dean, Owners

Mary and David Dean, Owners

Mary and David Dean are the owners of the Spirit Lake, IA office of Home Instead Senior Care. This husband and wife team enjoys working with others and is passionate about making a difference in the lives of seniors and their caregivers. Mary is a registered nurse and worked as a case manager and then as caregiver advocacy director at the Northwest Aging Association in Spencer, IA. After exploring the idea of owning a Home Instead Senior Care franchise, the Deans realized this was an ideal way to make a relevant difference in the lives of seniors in their community. "I enjoy working with seniors and making a difference in their lives," says Mary. Our goal is to help seniors age in place in their own homes, whether that be in a house, apartment, assisted living or nursing home, by providing non-medical in home care that focuses on helping seniors with their daily activities to remain safe and healthy.

Melissa Michels, Staff Coordinator

Melissa Michels, Staff Coordinator

Melissa joined our Home Instead Senior Care team in December of 2018 as our staff coordinator. Her job includes CAREGiver retention, recruitment and training, along with supporting Mary.   Melissa understands that it can sometimes be unsettling for the client when a CAREGiver first goes into a client's home, so she looks for qualities such as patience, understanding, dependability and experience when hiring new CAREGivers.

Melissa's education includes a Master's degree in mental health from Walden University. Prior to joining our team Melissa worked in social services.  She keeps busy with her husband, Dave and 3 young children.
