CAREGiver of the Month - Renuka

Home Instead Senior Care® of Lancaster County “walks the talk.” That was CAREGiver Renuka C.’s appraisal, and she hasn’t moved off that conclusion since starting work with the award-winning franchise on Sept. 20, 2014.

Renuka, a CNA who has been in senior care or home health care for the past 15 years in the Lancaster area, saw Home Instead’s mission statement online when she was looking for a fulfilling job to supplement her income. “I saw the Home Instead mission statement,” Renuka said, “and discovered that it is a Christian company. I thought to myself, ‘I should apply.’

“Other companies don’t walk the talk, but Home Instead does. They stand behind everything they say, both for clients and CAREGivers. God got me to the right company – I am convinced of that. I am blessed to work for such a great company and owners who follow a Christian ethic.

“On the last day of training, one of the owners, John Gibbel talked to our class. It just stood out in my mind because of the way he addressed us. Since then, when I’ve had occasion to see him, John remembers me and each of the clients I have. There is something special about that – it’s really a wonderful quality – and you can tell that he’s really a great guy who truly cares about his employees.”

“Special” is also a term the staff used to describe Renuka when the franchise honored her as CAREGiver of the Month.  “Renuka is thought of very highly. Her tenure with us has been less than a year, so you can see how highly our staff values her with this honor,” said Susan Shiner, the franchise’s CAREGiver development specialist.

Susan added comments from other staff members:

“Without a question, Renuka has bailed me out several times as a last-minute fill-in. She definitely gets my vote.”
“I LOVE Renuka!”
• “Renuka is always willing to pitch in as we need her, and she is just as willing to be as flexible as possible. She is a valuable asset to our CAREGiver team.”

Renuka takes a humble servant’s attitude toward her job of providing companionship, light housekeeping, medical reminders, meal preparation, errands and transportation. “Caregiving is not about me. God gave me the grace to do what I do. For sure, you have to have the heart to be a CAREGiver. Not everyone can do this,” said Renuka, a Sri Lanka native who moved to the Lancaster area from North Carolina in 1998.

“My mother was a nurse, and that was a dream of mine. I did not get into people-care work until after I moved to Lancaster. A gentleman and his wife pointed me in that direction, and I got the opportunity to work for a skilled care community while obtaining my CNA. I spent a little over 10 years with the skilled care community, working the night shift. I wanted to help my son and grandchild as a family caregiver, so I moved toward a day job and landed with a home health agency. I’ve also, in the past, done private-duty caregiving with clients who haven’t all been seniors. With this Home Instead income, I am able to help my son and daughter with college.”

Beyond dollars and cents, Renuka feels as if she’s working for a special company. “The office staff starts each day with a half-hour of prayer for its clients and employees,” Renuka said. “I have never seen this. Our bosses think so much of us and those we help that they pray for us. Anyone can claim to be Christians, but my bosses walk the talk.”
