  3. CAREGiver of the Month Fred

Working for Home Instead Senior Care® of Lancaster County is not just a job for Fred V.

“For me,” the CAREGiver of the Month said, “it is a ministry. I am here to serve my clients with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ – the Ultimate Caregiver for all of eternity – to the best of my ability.

“I enjoy meeting new people. Every person is like a door. When I step through the doorway into the lives of my clients and their families, it is like entering a new world. Although I always ask for their permission, I enjoy the privilege of praying with some clients and sometimes reading the Bible to them.”

Fred’s client responsibilities include meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, companionship, and transportation and errands. In addition, Fred and other CAREGivers offer assistance with eating, grooming, dressing, bathing, incontinence, cognitive impairment and mobility. By expertly doing so, Fred not only assists clients but helps their families eliminate worry and reduce stress.

While he is a CAREGiver, Fred also provides part-time administrative support in the franchise’s HR department.

“I also enjoy working with the wonderful people in our office. They are all Christ-centered, spirit-filled people who are full of God's mercy, grace and love,” said Fred, who lives in Strasburg, home of the Strasburg Railroad and the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre.

“I enjoy being a part of such a fantastic dedicated team. I know from being behind the scenes how hard these people work in the office. I also enjoy interacting with other CAREGivers when they stop by the office or when we gather at social events. And I get really excited when we hire new CAREGivers. The HR department does a very thorough screening process. Our CAREGivers are truly the cream of the crop. They are the very best, and we are so fortunate to have them.”

Fred worked for more than 35 years in the consulting engineering business, primarily as a project manager. When the bottom fell out of the residential housing market, the engineering work began to wither in 2007 and Fred finally left his firm in 2012 to find other employment. His subsequent job of dispatching trucks also eventually dried up because of workforce cutbacks.

During a Wednesday night worship team rehearsal at his church, where Fred plays bass guitar, he asked for prayer in finding a job. Amanda Fulton, who at the time was the worship leader and works at Home Instead as one of the Staffing Coordinators, asked Fred to consider Home Instead. He investigated and joined Home Instead in March 2014.

“It was an answer to prayer,” Fred said, “because I was looking for a way to give back and to say, ‘Thank you, Lord,’ for all the blessings I have received during my lifetime. To be honest, I also wanted to gain a better understanding of what seniors face as they deal with end-of-life issues so I could better prepare my own end-of-life planning. I applied and met with Sherry Kenderdine, who was the Recruitment and Retention Director and now is one of the Client Care Specialists. She is an awesome lady.”

Fred assists three male clients regularly and serves at least six additional clients on a fill-in basis. “Three clients passed away in my first year,” Fred said. “That is one of the toughest parts of the job. You get very close to someone when they depend on your day-to-day care.”

Summing up his experiences, Fred said, “God has blessed me tremendously by allowing me to meet so many wonderful people during my first year with Home Instead.”
