  3. CAREGiver of the Month Esther
Esther is the 17th book in the Old Testament of the Bible; Ruth is the eighth book.

So it should come as no surprise that Esther R. follows God’s lead in whatever she does. His direction, Esther said, led her to a CAREGiver’s job with Home Instead Senior Care® of Lancaster County. Fewer than four months after she joined the franchise on May 19, 2014, Esther was selected as CAREGiver of the Month, an honor that she humbly said “could have gone to a number of more deserving colleagues.”
“I feel God was letting me know where to go for a job when I found Home Instead in the want ads,” explained Esther, who had retired from a long-time hospital job on April 19, 2014. “I had never heard of Home Instead, but I investigated the company online before I applied.
“I looked at their standards and listened to their online video and felt good about them. I am impressed with their biblical values and standards. I really love the culture they have. They match their company credo with their actions.”

Number one on the Home Instead Senior Care® list of guiding principles is: “To honor God in all we do.”
Esther hasn’t been disappointed, not even one moment, with her new job. “I praise the Lord every day for giving me the gift of being able to help people who need the assistance,” said Esther, whose client responsibilities include meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, companionship, and transportation and errands.
Esther’s actions speak loudly with her clients and their families. While touching base with her faith as it pertains to caregiving, Esther made these specific points:

“I have compassion for every client.
“The job can be challenging, but that is OK.
“I love to help out every client.
“My clients are a blessing to me.
“I learn from my clients and their stories.
“I love to encourage people.”

Esther recalled her days more than 20 years ago when she was a hairdresser. “One day I asked God, ‘What more can I do to help people?’ And He directed me to senior care. I love elderly people. This is my gift,” said Esther, a resident of New Providence, about 11 miles south of Lancaster.

Esther got her start in senior care in 1995 when she worked in private-duty care for a woman for about three years before she passed away, including sleep-over shifts, while Esther also was working in a hospital library. “I did a lot of personal care for that first client. I prayed about the decision to help her and found it was right,” Esther recalled, “and I also went out and got my CNA certification about the same time. I have continued to keep that certification current.”
Key words for Esther are relationship, trust, friendship and Golden Rule as outlined in Matthew 7:12:  “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” Esther also lists Matthew 6:33 as “a favorite verse,” and Isaiah 40:31 as “my favorite, favorite verse.” The passage in Isaiah often resonates with seniors:

“But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.”

Esther loves nothing more than to try to help her clients soar in any way she can.
