CAREGiver of the Month - Amy Jo

Amy Jo Phillips flourished in the corporate world as a successful insurance broker for more than 20 years; she was even an agency co-owner. But something was missing, so she made a stunning decision. “The business was a phenomenal success, and I had well-paying job, but I felt empty at day’s end. After I began volunteering for various organizations, including the Office of Aging, and serving on nonprofit boards,” Amy Jo explained, “I knew I had to do something else.”

Years from now, what will be Amy Jo’s legacy? Based on her entrepreneurial acumen, many people would accurately say, “She was a successful businesswoman.” But Amy Jo offered: “At the end of the day, if I am able to help someone, that’s what I want my legacy to be.”

Amy Jo joined Home Instead Senior Care® of Lancaster in February 2016. Eight months later, she was honored as CAREGiver of the Month. Choosing Home Instead Senior Care was well-researched and deliberate. “I consulted senior-care facility administrators and talked to others. I interviewed with four agencies, but the fact was, I was interviewing them. I knocked potential employers off the list pretty fast. It’s like judging good chocolate candy and not-so-good chocolate candy. It doesn’t take long to figure it out,” Amy Jo said.

Amy Jo quickly had a great feeling at Home Instead Senior Care. After interviewing with co-owner Ryan Roy and CAREGiver Recruitment and Engagement Specialist Susan Shiner, Amy Jo saw one of the other co-owners, John Gibbel, walk in the door.

“It was an ‘a-ha moment’ for me. I knew John and his character because he also had been an insurance broker, and it was fabulous to see him. He gave up insurance to get into the business of helping others like I wanted to do. God gave me a sign of reassurance when I saw John. There is no doubt this is where I was supposed to be,” Amy Jo said. “After I started, I once had a transportation dilemma. John, with a child in tow, drove me to my shifts and then home.”

She has not regretted the career change, which provides flexibility for her family that includes her husband and two daughters, one in college and the other in high school. Both are soccer players. Amy Jo also volunteers at a nonprofit organization, using her sales and accounting skills. “I am not one who likes to sit at home. I would do anything that’s for the good of someone. There’s an old saying that points out if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. I get so much satisfaction from being a CAREGiver,” Amy Jo said. “I want more ongoing training so I can feel confident in assisting different types of clients such as hospice. I love the client relationships, and I also would be open to working in the office because business and customer service were two of my strengths.”

Thinking of encountering the unexpected and overcoming daily challenges, Amy Jo said: “Sometimes I have no idea what will happen when I come through the door. I enjoy being creative and turning around a situation without the client realizing it. More than just the clients, I have met a lot of phenomenal family members. I have seen family members who come in the door after a day of work, and they are relieved to see a senior loved one who has had proper care. That also provides a sense of fulfillment.”
