Serving Others Is a Reward for Rachel

Rachel Davis is the quintessential CAREGiver, complete with a humility factor of 11 on a scale of 10. When asked about being selected not only as the CAREGiver of the Month but also as the CAREGiver of the Quarter, Rachel deflects the praise and offers instead to explain why she’s working for the Home Instead Senior Care® franchise that serves Houston, Bellaire, Missouri City and Sugar Land. Her words get to the heart of the matter – serving others is reward enough for Rachel.

“Well,” Rachel said, “I like doing this because I get to help people who need help, people who can’t do it for themselves. I assist them every day to achieve the things they want to do but cannot on their own. Yes, you must have a huge heart to do this kind of work.”

Instead of explaining how she does what she does so successfully, Rachel would rather tell you what has tripped her trigger the most in recent days: “My client is 95,” she said, “and he’s starting to look much better, and that makes me happiest.”

Noting the upside of what happened after she called for an ambulance to take her client to the hospital because of pneumonia, Rachel said: “I’ve been with him in a rehabilitation facility for four days, and we’ve been told he’s got 16 more days there before he can go home. Except for weekends, I will be with him from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. And that’s our goal: Get him back home with his daughter and grandson.”

Another thing that sparks a smile and perhaps a laugh or two from Rachel is when she hears her client’s trademark words: “Hot damn, Rachel!” That confirms her client is feeling better. “My client is so awesome, so lovely. He gets me to laughing with his favorite phrase, ‘Hot damn!’ You can’t help but laugh – he is so funny when he is feeling better. He came into the facility so frail but is now getting his bearings,” Rachel said.

“I think we’d have more fun if I could take him down to karaoke, but he has to remain isolated because of the pneumonia and the threat of a relapse. He’d like to go listen to the music, but he can’t. He sings random songs or words. I don’t know what he’s singing or I’d join in. We also have played a card game he likes that was unfamiliar to me.”

That’s what an award-winning CAREGiver does – provide whatever a client needs in every situation. Staff Coordinator Destiny Wesley marvels at Rachel’s skills and unique personality. “We appreciate all of Rachel’s hard work, and she has definitely earned this recognition. Rachel is a dependable CAREGiver who has amazed our office staff,” Destiny said. “Rachel’s skill set is very diverse. She is the type of CAREGiver who I can send anywhere, from a simple companionship assignment for a client to a total care client who requires careful transfers. Rachel truly loves what she does and genuinely cares for people. She has a heart for seniors or people with physical limitations. Rachel is very humble, sensitive, confident, funny, patient, hardworking and knowledgeable about the industry she works in.”

Rachel, who joined Home Instead Senior Care on March 25, 2014, has been working for 17 years in senior care or with people who need assistance. Much of her previous work had come as a private-duty caregiver. “When I found Home Instead,” Rachel said, “I was just looking for a better job. I found it.

“What’s not to like with our office staff? I love them. If anything happens, they are there to help.  If I am hungry on a long shift, they will come feed me. Greg Gomez-Mira, our franchise owner; Stacy McClennon, our recruitment and retention coordinator; and Destiny are all good people with good hearts. Training is good, and it is a good company. I will work for them as long as they want to keep me. They are one of the very best I’ve worked for.”
