​​Client, Family Treat Jessica as One of Their Own

There wasn’t a work assignment on Monday, May 30, 2016, for Jessica Baker, a two-time CAREGiver of the Month for the award-winning Home Instead Senior Care® franchise that serves Houston, Bellaire, Missouri City and Sugar Land. Jessica accepted an invitation and enjoyed her day off at a birthday party for her client who turned 66. 

The food was great, and one of the client’s sisters baked a superb cake. The house was filled with family. Asked what her role in the party was, Jessica smiled broadly, chuckled and said: “I celebrated! It was a good time. I have received invitations to other family events, but I usually want my client to spend those times with her family members since I am with her so often. She’s got three surviving sisters, three brothers and her dad. I don’t want them to miss any time with her.” 

The client and her relatives have formed close relationships with Jessica, who began assisting the client a short time before she was honored as CAREGiver of the Month for the first time in April 2015.  “Jessica’s client and the client’s family treat Jessica as if she is family,” Staff Coordinator Destiny Wesley said while announcing Jessica’s CAREGiver of the Month honor that came 15 months after the first one. 

Destiny added, “Jessica has been a very dedicated employee and CAREGiver since she joined our franchise in the fall of 2013. She always strives to be the best. She is very punctual, and she takes her job duties very seriously. What I love most about Jessica is her laugh. It takes a lot to get her to chuckle, but it is well worth it when she does!”

Jessica actually laughs rather easily but admits she gets a little nervous whenever she gets a call from the office. “You always wonder if something is wrong,” Jessica said, “so maybe I sound a little somber when I pick up the phone.” Jessica has turned the tables on Destiny and elicits giggles when she tells Destiny, “I am brand new.” That’s a unique greeting response Jessica picked up from a venerable gentleman at her longtime church, St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church in southwest Houston. 

“ ‘I am brand new’ is my friend’s endearing way of saying ‘everything’s great,’ ” said Jessica, whose heart has been on display for the 39 years at St. Benedict as an active member and regular  volunteer. It’s easy to see why Jessica is a CAREGiver of the Month – she’s always been immersed in faith-based servanthood. 

Among her work with several church service organizations and as an usher at St. Benedict, Jessica is an honored Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary.  The group involves families in the church and community activities by promoting civic improvements, developing youth and providing social intellectual and charitable fellowship for its members. “We reach out to those in need,” Jessica said. 

Her faith is one of the reasons Jessica keeps her Sundays open. Otherwise, she works six-hour shifts with her client Tuesday through Friday. Jessica was the client’s first CAREGiver and is now one of several who assist the client, who recently underwent a surgical procedure that has helped her quality of life. 

When the client sees Jessica come through the door, it’s like a green light. “She knows I am the one who will get her out of the home and take her for drives. She used to like to go every day, but we’ve slowed that to every other day because of her medical challenges. The mall formerly was her primary destination, but it doesn’t matter anymore as long as she gets out of the house. Sometimes it’s the grocery store or it could be the mall or maybe a medical appointment,” Jessica said. 

One definite weekly destination is the house where her client’s 84-year-old father lives. “He’s thrilled to see his daughter. They don’t live far apart. I talk to her dad often,” Jessica said. “He’s on dialysis, but he’s doing fine.” 

Days when her client and dad get together are usually great ones, Jessica said. As some would say, those days are “brand new.”
