It has been 2½ years since Carmen Ventura earned her first CAREGiver of the Month honor at the Home Instead Senior Care® franchise that serves Houston, Bellaire, Missouri City and Sugar Land. After the spotlight again shined on the humble CAREGiver in January, she giggled when she was asked if much had changed since July 2013. Turning the question into a query about similarities, she offered these responses:
Carmen is headed toward the third year with one client, and she'd love to see the relationship with the stroke victim continue for as long as possible. Carmen feels privileged to serve the 87-year-old military veteran six days a week, which is a huge help to his wife and daughter. "He is a nice person," Carmen said, "and so is his whole family."
Through it all, Carmen has been an encourager. In the home, the client uses a brace and a walker. When he goes on trips, he's in a wheelchair. "We try to get him to walk, make him move a little during a period of a half-hour to an hour because it helps his body. I take him outside if I can, and he's usually all right with it. Of course, you can't force him if he doesn't want to do it. I always am there to help when he showers, and that is virtually every day."
Although his wife is not also a client, Carmen doesn't mind helping her when she needs it. "Their daughter shops and gets groceries. I am there to give her time to do that, too," Carmen said. "My client also has assistance from his son-in-law. They are all good people, funny people with a sense of humor, and I get along with all of them."
Staff Coordinator Destiny Wesley said: "Carmen is a gem. She is so quiet that you can tend to forget about her, but boy, I will tell you Carmen's work ethic won't let you forget her. She is a timely person who looks to make her clients happy and loves to see them doing well. Carmen is a seasoned CAREGiver who is compassionate and soft-spoken." Tongue in check, Destiny added: "Carmen also is humorous, although she tries to keep that under wraps."
Destiny recalled when Carmen was introduced to Home Instead Senior Care by her sister Joyce, who has worked for the franchise since 2008 as a CAREGiver. "Carmen started in May 2013 and already was honored as CAREGiver of the Month just months later," Destiny noted. "Since I have been employed with Home Instead Senior Care, Carmen is perhaps the best referral hire we have gotten."
Carmen was not new to senior care – she worked for a senior-care agency in New York before moving to Houston in February 2013. She is an accredited home health care aide. Carmen said the best thing she did after arriving in Houston was follow her sister's advice to join Home Instead Senior Care.
"My sister said everybody connected to the franchise was very nice and friendly, from the office staff and other CAREGivers to the clients and their families – everyone." Referring to franchise owner Greg Gomez-Mira, Carmen said: "I love working for Greg because he always has been a great guy. My sister said I would enjoy working for the office, and she was right. I try to do my very best every day. The clients and their families are very appreciative. I like that."
