Margret Adds New Technology to Caregiving RepertoireOctober 2019 CAREGiver of the Month - Margret S.

CAREGiver of the Month Margret Stevenson and Home Instead Senior Care® of Lubbock are trying new technology to help their clients, experimenting with an enhanced-care device called the GrandPad®. “It’s a good deal. It’s up to the family because some clients can’t comprehend it, but that’s not the case with my client. Actually, it might be good for most clients,” Margret said.

Margret said her 80-year-old client always has been interested in the GrandPad and never has turned down an opportunity to use it. She was the franchise’s first CAREGiver to use GrandPad. “I brought it into his home on his birthday, July 24. We took pictures of cupcakes and a bouquet of balloons,” said Margret, who noted the client keeps the GrandPad in his home.

“We listen to Christian music on the GrandPad, so that’s one great GrandPad use as far as the client is concerned. The GrandPad also can access Bible verses. The client, who was a church deacon and sang in his church’s choir, prompts me about the GrandPad and asks, ‘Where’s the music?’ The GrandPad is worth the time, and we spend a lot of time on it.”

Through the GrandPad, the widower can do an activity. “I call Susan at the Home Instead office for a daily activity, and she programs it. Also, we go through new pictures and medical news. Family pictures are loaded on the GrandPad by  the client’s son. His son sent a lot of vacation pictures, and we went through them,” explained Margret, who had no problems using the GrandPad. She already had her own tablet, laptop and iPhone.

“GrandPad has been made available to six CAREGivers and their clients at no extra cost,” said Tracy Baugh, who co-owns the award-winning franchise with her husband Terry. “The technological innovation comes with features for connecting clients with their loved ones – but without the complicated features of other tablets. The large buttons and intuitive interface make the device a simple tablet for seniors who want to start video chatting and sharing memories with family and friends. The tablet comes with essential apps seniors can use to connect with loved ones or pass the time with popular games and customized music.”

For Margret’s client, sometimes there’s nothing like going straight to the Good Book. “He’s really into reading and studying the Bible. There are a lot of study marks in his Bible, and I read Scripture to him. I usually pick one verse and see if he wants me to continue. He has a Bible-themed calendar and flips to the date. He reads the Bible verse that corresponds to the date and says ‘Amen.’ ” Margret said.

Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Juanita Camacho: “Our sweet Margret is so amazing and has many qualities that contribute to being a great CAREGiver. She is compassionate, caring, warm, loyal and trustworthy. She is a nurturing person, and this powerful characteristic allows her to build strong relationships with clients and their families. Margret communicates well with co-workers, staff, clients and families. She always has a kind word and a smile to share with whomever she meets. Margret treats everyone with the highest degree of dignity and respect.”

Margret joined Home Instead Senior Care on Nov. 9, 2016. In 1999, she retired from hospital work after 21 years of service. Margret was a CNA, starting at a new hospital in 1979. She went to college for nursing for two years but left school when her mother got sick. “I worked in every part of the hospital, from ER to OB and pediatrics. I was a tech in labor and delivery at another hospital. That’s my life – helping people,” Margret said.

Margret paused her Home Instead employment to take care of her husband, who successfully battled prostate cancer. Her husband, originally from Bryan, Texas, was on vacation in Lubbock when he first met Margret. After they married, they settled in Lubbock. “My daughter followed me to Home Instead Senior Care and spent about a year as a CAREGiver. She now is a trainer at the Lubbock State School. My granddaughter worked for Home Instead Senior Care in Fort Worth. So, Home Instead has been an important part of our family,” Margret pointed out.

Juanita, when announcing Margret’s October CAREGiver of the Month honor, said: “Margret goes above and beyond to make sure our clients receive the best possible care and the family has peace of mind. “Margret continues to show compassion, dedication and excellent work ethic. Margret truly represents Home Instead Senior Care with her commitment and dedication to our clients and our company.”
