Lucy's Clients Love Her Help, Reciprocate with Advice

Two-time CAREGiver of the Month Lucy Rangel's God-given companionship skills with clients and their families are off the charts. Since Lucy started with Home Instead Senior Care® of Lubbock on July 15, 2010, she has wanted to learn everything about her clients so she can assist them in the best way possible.

Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Juanita Camacho said: "She is fun to be around. Lucy builds great relationships with our clients, our clients' families, co-workers, staff and other medical professionals. Lucy places no limitations on the care she provides for our clients."

It appears the clients want to know everything about Lucy, and they've even offered to share their wisdom on everything, including dating advice. Several clients have generated smiles and laughter with well-meaning exhortations.

When Lucy took one client to her favorite steakhouse, the client noticed how handsome their waiter was. While Lucy was engrossed with the menu, the client made sure Lucy noticed the waiter. The client told Lucy: "You will miss something if you don't look up." If that weren't enough, the client shed her filter completely, reached for the waiter's face and mentioned that Lucy "was available." Lucy laughed and said, "I blushed. I had a matchmaker. She meant well."

Another client told Lucy that during a bygone era when couples were getting married at 18 and 19, he and his wife dated for a long time before marrying at 25. "He told me how he courted his wife and recalled that it was raining on the June day when they married. He shared a lot of great memories," Lucy said. "He was something else. He died several years ago, and I miss him dearly. His wife is still a client. I have good memories of the two of them."

One of those memories was the self-deprecating nature of the husband's client, who was a scholarship football player at Texas Tech University in 1944 and 1945 after he had served in the military. On Coach Dell Morgan's 1945 team, the client held a leadership role, having been selected as one of two co-captains. "He was a center," Lucy noted. "He and his wife had cheerful natures. As much as I help her, she keeps me going and puts a smile on my face."

Lucy also fondly recalls finding Home Instead Senior Care in a newspaper advertisement while she and her oldest sister were in the final months of caring for their late mother in Lucy's home. She learned a lot about senior care during that time.

"Mom was very ill, and I had lots of practice at senior care. One sweet nurse, Jamonica, taught us a lot about caring for Mom, including making transfers and so much more. I never forgot," said Lucy, whose mother passed away Oct. 7, 2010, nearly three months after Lucy had started with Home Instead Senior Care.

Her mother's death also came two months before Lucy graduated from Lubbock Christian University with a humanities degree. Lucy, who had considered a nursing career, values the initial training and ongoing education that is available for CAREGivers at her award-winning franchise owned by Tracy and Terry Baugh. CAREGivers like Lucy also benefit from Home Instead CAREGiver training classes for Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, CAREGivers are versed in care for those with chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease, depression and weight-related issues.

"It has been seven years with Home Instead Senior Care, and I am still going strong," Lucy said. "The CAREGiver-client bonding is good. I've had clients and their family members asking about me and my family, so it is like having another family. One former dementia client went to a memory unit and still remembered me and my name, even in her last days."

Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator Juanita noted Lucy's versatility that allows her to work with nearly any client no matter what the challenges.

"Lucy is a skilled CAREGiver who takes her responsibility seriously. Lucy is very much a take-charge type CAREGiver. No matter the situation, Lucy will make sure the needs are met to the highest level possible," Juanita said. "Lucy is honest, hard-working, trustworthy, kind and personable. I have known Lucy for many years, and I can say this is one superwoman of a lady. Lucy handles all that life brings her with grace and dignity. God bless her always and forever."
