Rebecca Feels Love, Loyalty, Appreciation

After spending eight years in the restaurant and food services industry, Rebecca Childress craved a fulfilling job where she could help people. She found work where she receives a double dose of appreciation. “There is a loyalty with Home Instead Senior Care® that you just don’t normally see, and it was a huge change for me. I have never felt more loved by an employer and by the people I was serving,” she said, “including their families.”

Rebecca said she was fortunate to find Home Instead Senior Care of Iredell and Alexander Counties in Statesville.

“I wasn’t necessarily and specifically looking for Home Instead Senior Care during an online search,” Rebecca said, “but Home Instead caught my eye. After I investigated the franchise more completely, I realized that’s where I wanted to be. I had no professional experience in senior care, but I had done some volunteering.”

Rebecca recalled her middle school and senior high days when she helped with exceptional children classes. “It made me feel good,” she said, “and it felt like an accomplishment.”

After three years with the Home Instead Senior Care franchise owned by Tracey and Creighton Gibson, Rebecca said she is just as happy with the job as she was on her first day Aug. 1, 2012. “It has been like a dream come true,” Rebecca said. “This is what I want to do, and it has been since I was younger because I have empathy for people. This really is a dream job. It feels good to keep people in their homes instead of seeing them sent off to nursing homes.

“I like the one-on-one care, the personal relationships that I am able to build. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, clients end up going to facilities because it might eventually be impossible to keep them at home. I was sad to lose a dementia client. ”

In announcing that Rebecca was CAREGiver of the Month for August, Human Resources Manager Lori McKay said: “We are pleased to honor Rebecca, who is a wonderful CAREGiver.”

Rebecca said Home Instead Senior Care’s training has been helpful, especially for someone who wasn’t familiar with a lot of senior care techniques. “They provided good insight that prepared me well,” she said. “I always had the enthusiasm. I thought the office was very thorough, and everybody was helpful when questions came up. The office is good at building relationships with employees. We CAREGivers feel appreciated at meetings; wonderful, in fact.”

Rebecca has two regular clients, including an 82-year-old man who she has assisted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the past year and a half. “I am helping him, and by doing that, I am also helping his wife,” Rebecca said. “The challenges include mobility and congestive heart failure. He has his weak days, and I help him move around. I also help this couple by running errands.

“He used to get out of the house for a senior luncheon at his church once a month, but not lately because he is recovering from an ailment that landed him in the hospital. He has been on 24/7 care since he got out of the hospital. I hand off at 2 p.m. to another member of our team.”

Rebecca quickly learned to recognize her client’s signs that lead to trouble, and she could tell from swelling and wheezing about a year ago that he was about to go into distress. “I called his daughter, and together we decided to get him checked out,” Rebecca recalled, “so I took him to the emergency room. The good thing is that he’s been able to get back home each time.”

For the past two years, Rebecca also has helped a Saturday client, who needs help with meal preparation, medication reminders and light housekeeping. The client has a male CAREGiver from Monday through Friday.

Rebecca loves Home Instead’s flexible scheduling that allows her to take care of her family when she’s needed most. “At 3 p.m. every day,” Rebecca said, “I take over the role of Mom again. That’s the wonderful thing about working with this company. They are considerate of your personal life and will work with you on what you need. What’s not to like about Home Instead? There have been chances for other jobs, but I would have to give up my dream to do something else. Dreams are more important to me.”
