Fabiola Finds a Fabulous Job as CAREGiver

Asked about the circumstances behind her employment at Home Instead Senior Care® of Iredell and Alexander Counties, Fabiola Bell prefaced her explanation by saying: “God works in mysterious ways. It happened so fast – I didn’t see it coming. But I am really good with people, so maybe it wasn’t totally surprising when I look back.”

On April 1, while Fabiola was assisting an elderly church member during lunch, the senior suddenly suffered an aneurysm and passed away. “It unfolded right in front of me,” she recalled. Twenty-four hours later, Fabiola applied online with Home Instead Senior Care. On April 3, Fabiola became a CAREGiver with the award-winning Statesville franchise owned by Tracey and Creighton Gibson.

For Fabiola, something wonderful followed the sorrowful situation. “I love my job. But, actually, I was just looking around online, not job searching, and Home Instead popped up. I sent in an application and got called the same day. Things moved pretty quickly,” Fabiola said.

Five months after joining Home Instead, Fabiola was honored as CAREGiver of the Month.

“I thank God that He put me in this work to make a difference and put a smile on someone’s face. I am repaid by my clients’ smiles and those of their families,” said Fabiola, who helped the elderly at her church from month to month as a private-duty caregiver before joining Home Instead Senior Care.

“I fall in love with my clients, and it is in my blood to help people. I treat my clients the way I would like to be treated – it is the principle of the Golden Rule. Eventually it will come around full circle because you never know when you will be in a situation where you will have to depend on others.” Fabiola added.

One of Fabiola’s clients started service with Home Instead on the day when she began working for the franchise. “It was firsts for both us,” Fabiola pointed out. “We became very close.”

So close, in fact, that the client was desperately calling out Fabiola’s name when she walked in one recent morning to start her shift. To Fabiola’s shock, her client had fallen earlier in the morning, could not get up and required immediate medical attention. “With tears falling from my eyes,” Fabiola recounted, “I ran to the phone and called 911.  I gave the glory to God because I was able to assist her in such a difficult circumstance. She truly needed me, was counting on me to come through the door and was happy and overjoyed to see me despite her pain.”

Fabiola is a regular companion who assists her client on weekdays and other as-needed shifts. “Her daughter also checks in on her every day, and she calls me and we communicate well,” Fabiola said.

In addition to her other caregiving duties, Fabiola takes special care with meal preparation for medical reasons. “Chef” Fabiola creates a month’s worth of menu scheduling for her client and does the shopping on Tuesdays. Fabiola dived into information about her client’s malady, immersed herself in the specifics and knows the subject inside and out. “I know everything about my client,” she noted. Fabiola’s attention to detail and concern for her client led the client’s daughter to say, “Fabiola, you are the best thing to have happened to my mother.”

“There are a variety of things she cannot eat,” Fabiola said, “but she still likes them. So what I do is substitute ingredients so that her taste buds will feel as if they are getting her favorites.

“For example, instead of preparing the usual barbeque pork that everyone else eats, I make my own special barbeque sauce for her and substitute fish for pork. It took a little experimenting at first on my part, but it works really well, and she loves it. I do that with other dishes, too. When I cannot be with her, I leave detailed and specific instructions for the other CAREGivers. Really, it is not complicated because I am her only regular CAREGiver.”

Food, menus and meal preparation aside, Fabiola has attained an appetite for old-time TV series from her client. “I Love Lucy.” “Golden Girls.” “Leave It To Beaver.” “Dennis The Menace.” Fabiola admits: “Now I can’t wait to watch the next episodes of those series with my client. Westerns also are big for her.”

All in all, Fabiola said, she loves her time with her client. “She is so excited to see me in the morning that if I am a little tired, her smile and greeting make me happy and rejuvenate me,” said Fabiola, who also firmly asserted: “But it’s all about the clients and not about me. I put my clients first, always. She is just like a grandmother to me.”

Fabiola also has a strong feeling for her Home Instead office staff. “I love them. They are the best family I ever had. They are always smiling, welcoming, understanding and flexible. I always say I don’t know where God will be sending me next, but for now I know I am where I should be,” Fabiola said.
