Helping Seniors in Mooresville and Statesville (including all of Iredell and Alexander Counties)

Locally owned and operated by Iredell County natives Creighton and Tracey Gibson

Creighton Gibson started his own business more than ten years ago in hopes that others wouldn't have to endure what he and his family did. Gibson is the franchise owner of Home Instead Senior Care of Iredell and Alexander Counties, which is a provider of in-home care to help seniors with their daily activities. Its 150+ CAREGivers provide services such as meal preparation, medication reminders, Alzheimer's care, Personal Care Services (bathing, grooming, and hygiene), light housekeeping, and transportation. The business cares for more than 100 clients. Gibson decided to open a Home Instead Franchise because it was the oldest and largest franchise he found.

"I was looking for what I would look for as a client," he said.

Gibson was the sole caregiver for his parents, who have since passed away. For three years, Gibson took a lot of time away from work to take care of his father, who lived in a nursing home. He said his father was not receiving the proper care that he should have.

"After that I was mentally and physically worn out," he said. "I thought if I could find a service that provided what I needed with my dad, I would pursue it."

Gibson said his situation would have been a lot less stressful if he had this type of service available to him. Now others involved in similar situations are able to benefit from his decision to bring the business to the area.

"It's a good service, and I'm pleased with what I've been getting," said Beatrice Willis, a client of two years.

The 80-year-old woman said she needed help after taking a fall at her daughter's house. She and her family looked into several care services and were impressed by what Gibson's business had to offer. She said Gibson was compassionate and showed an authentic concern for her.

"He's a fine fellow for what he's doing," she said. "He saw the need and did something about it."

Making the leap wasn't easy. Even after months of pondering, if was very difficult to leave the comfort of J.C Steele & Sons, where he had worked for 17 years. Gibson said working at the company was his dream job. He wore many hats including programming, supervisor, mechanist and customer service. The company treated him well.

"It was the scariest day of my life to turn in my notice," he said. "It was a tremendous leap of faith for me to leave the security of J.C Steele, but I felt like this is what I ought to be doing." He said getting thank-you letters from clients makes his job worth it: "It's really a gratifying experience when you know you're making a difference to a senior's quality of life."

In 2009 Creighton and Tracey were presented with the Business of the Year award by the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce for Home Instead's impact in the community, both as a business model and for the company's dedication to community projects such as their Be a Santa to a Senior program and the company's local involvement and leadership for the Iredell County Alzheimer's Memory Walk.
