"I believe Shantinique, my Home Instead CAREGiver, is my guardian angel." – A client with Home Instead Senior Care® Livonia
Award-winning CAREGiver Shantinique Williams immediately knew something was wrong with her client. There was a fever, wheezing and cough.
"I have worked with him so much that I knew everything about him," Shantinique said. "I dialed 911 and got him transported to the hospital."
It took three weeks for the client to return home, but CAREGiver of the Month Shantinique deserved the credit for saving the day.
"I couldn't wait for him to come home – I was visiting him every day. Half the time, I was acting like his personal cheerleader, encouraging him to get better and telling him that he needed to get well soon and come back to me. The other half of the time, I prayed and prayed like a pastor would. I want the very best for him," Shantinique said.
Shantinique's actions made quite an impression on her client. "Now he's been calling me his guardian angel. He told me, 'You gave me a reason to believe,' " Shantinique said.
But Shantinique said her client has provided her with a source of power simply by showing an example of never-give-up strength despite the continued certainty of a difficult life.
"My client taught me that you can learn a lot if you just work from your heart. He gave me strength just by watching him be so strong. My client also helped me realize that no matter how bad it may seem, there is still some good in living the life you have and that's what you have to hold on to," Shantinique said.
The client is Shantinique's only one – by her choice. She works with him seven days a week, providing respite for the client's nephew, who lives with him and cares for his uncle. "My client is a sweetheart, and I am attached to him. For me, it is like taking care of an uncle. I let go of all of my other clients to assist him. He has told me, 'Other than my nephew, you are the only one who can take care of me.' I've been with him ever since I started with Home Instead Senior Care," Shantinique said.
Companionship is a strong aspect of Shantinique's care. "It has been the spring and summer from hell for him," Shantinique said. "But I was there to help and will continue to do so."
Help also was available for Shantinique during her time of need just five months earlier. It came in the form of constant encouragement from franchise owner Glenna Yaroch and the office staff. "I started with Home Instead Senior Care in March," Shantinique said, "but I had to leave work for two weeks in May because of an illness in the family that involved a hospitalization. I had my priorities, and Home Instead agreed. I came back in June, and that is one of the things that makes Home Instead so great. They gave me the time off and allowed me to come back.
"I love working for Home Instead Senior Care. One of the things I love is the teamwork – we work together. Home Instead is like a family because I know they are there for me. Home Instead has been very supportive of me because they were calling to inquire about our well-being, asking how we were doing even though I was not working. No other employers that I know of will do that for you. Glenna is a good boss.
"I love my job. I am not doing it for the money – I am doing it from my heart."
