My Mom

My mom is a Home Instead Senior Care client. She hates it! No, not the Home Instead part. Just the part where she needs a little help to continue to live independently in the home where she has lived for 50 years.

You see, my mom is nearly 95 years old, and she has been widowed for almost 25 years. She is an amazing woman, and her hands have largely molded me into the person I am today. She is fiercely independent, still volunteers in her church and her community, and only gave up driving last Christmas. Over the years she has received numerous community service awards and been recognized for her serving nature time and time again. She taught for over 40 years, and has been retired for 30! But over the years she has always stood on her own two feet, and has never asked anyone for help.

Now she needs some. Her Home Instead CAREGiversm comes several times a week. She cleans the house, runs errands, helps her with little things like opening the new peanut butter jar, and keeps her company. My mom likes her CAREGiver. She just doesn't like needing the help. I understand this, as I am much like her. But her struggle with needing help is what makes owning my Home Instead office so much more personal. It is why I tell every CAREGiver we hire that the client they care for might just be the owner's mother. And it is why it is so important to me that our clients are well-cared for, and that our CAREGivers have the best training available, and are paid well, so that they are really invested in giving great care to every client they serve.

My mom is not a client in my Home Instead office. She lives in another state. But I look at every client we serve as if he or she were my own parent. Because, to me, it is VERY personal!
