Whether it's the Norman Rockwell ideal of a piping hot roast turkey with all the trimmings, take-out sushi, or anything in between, nearly every family has a tradition of gathering together, at least occasionally, for a meal.
Sadly, that tradition seems to be declining, and its seniors who tend to feel the loss most acutely. In fact, in a recent study conducted by Home Instead Senior Care, half of the families who responded feel they do not have enough sit-down dinners with their senior relatives who live near them.
That's why we're encouraging families right here in Berkshire County to take the Sunday Dinner Pledge. For each person who commits to regularly scheduling family dinners with senior loved ones between now and July 31, 2015, the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation will donate $1 (up to $20,000) to Meals on Wheels America.
To help families who take the pledge, Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with Food Network celebrity Chef Melissa d'Arabian to highlight the importance of regular family dinners. In addition, a dietitian for the Home Instead Senior Care network has developed easy, nutritious recipes and healthy food plans. Other resources include tips for how to involve seniors in meal planning and preparation, pre- and post-dinner activities and suggestions for senior friendly meal planning at home or away.
