​​CAREGiver of the Month Sabrina holds many thoughtful principles about senior care, but she boils it down in the simplest terms when she says:


"I put myself in my clients' shoes."



Explaining further in parable fashion, Sabrina said: "What would I want from my CAREGiver if the tables were turned? My concern is always for my clients and their safety. Dignity and independence for my clients are also important as we together work through their challenges, whether it is mobility, dementia, a combination of the two or something else. With all of my heart, I want to make my clients happy. I bond with my clients, and that feeling means so much to me. I love to hear, 'I am so happy to see you' when I come through the door."


For seniors who need assistance to remain in their homes for the first time, Sabrina said, it is a time of transition in their lives. Having a stranger in their home can be difficult at first. "I try to make that transition as smooth as possible. I will do everything in my power, within reason and within the bounds of their safety, to do what they ask. I want to put a smile on their faces and try to make their lives easier," Sabrina said.


Sabrina's entry into the work world came as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility. Hurricane Katrina disrupted life in 2005, and Sabrina finally returned to the New Orleans area six years ago. She joined owner Lisa Rabito's award-winning Home Instead Senior Care® franchise in Metairie on April 13, 2015, on the word of a friend. "My friend is just like a sister, and she was a CAREGiver. I trusted her," Sabrina said.


Asked to evaluate her job, Sabrina said: "I like it because I like caring for people. If I were in a facility, I could not afford to provide such personal care because I would have at least eight residents, and there would be little time to spend with each patient. But since this is one-on-one care, I can be patient and go as slowly as needed. That's the best form of care. The key here is to get to know the clients so well that you know how to work with them the best."


On a personal front, Sabrina said among her job perks are flexibility in scheduling and good people with whom to work.


"Our bosses care about us. That is the whole reason they have made this company a good business. I sometimes wonder, 'Do I call too much with questions?'  They tell me, 'No.' They answer any and all questions and do it promptly," Sabrina said.  


"At CAREGiver meetings, the staff listens to employee concerns and wants to know our dreams. They also share about their families and how they are doing. They focus on their clients, but they also put us right up there as a primary priority. They are selfless in that they worry about us and how we and our families are doing."


CAREGiver Development Specialist Fay Kelting praised Sabrina, saying, "She is a fabulous CAREGiver who gives 110 percent to her clients.  Sabrina goes above and beyond."
