  3. Nelda Went for a Pedicure, Learned About 'Awesome Job'

Nelda Antoine Metairie.jpgOn the day when Nelda left her former job, she went for a pedicure. That's where her oldest daughter's friend recognized Nelda and asked, "What's going on in your life?"

"I am looking for another job, and I know it might be tough," Nelda replied. The woman didn't hesitate when she told Nelda, "Go to Home Instead Senior Care® in Metairie. I am a CAREGiver there, they are great people to work for and they will hire you in a second."

She was right. Two days later, on Sept. 16, 2014, Home Instead Senior Care hired a future award-winning CAREGiver. "Nelda had been with us just shy of one year when we honored her as CAREGiver of the Month," CAREGiver Development Specialist Fay Kelting said. "More than just 'good," Fay said, "Nelda has become one of our most outstanding CAREGivers. She always goes the distance to help the client in any way needed. She does her job in a truly loving, sincere, and at times, humorous way.  She has a personality to which you are drawn."

"I like everything about my job, including the clients, co-workers and bosses. Our owner, Lisa Rabito, is not only the CEO, but she is a friend and a friend who also prays for me and deeply cares for each one of us. Not only Lisa, but the entire staff is empathetic to us CAREGivers," said Nelda, who compassionately worked with mentally challenged adults for a number of years. "I love helping someone. I treat them just as if I am with my mother. I want them to feel wanted when I am assisting them. It is not simply what you are doing for them – it is how you do it. You do it with God's love and concern because seniors are people who deserve respect and dignity."

Asked for a memorable story about her regular client, Nelda said: "It's every day when I come through the door and see those big, beautiful blue eyes light up and a wide smile forms. She's someone who really trusts me and wants to me to pray with her – how neat is that? She even insists that I join her Bible study when I take her there. The same goes for all of her friends because they involve me with treats, materials and questions about what I think."

But what about the job challenges, Nelda?

"There's nothing new for me," she said. "I've taken care of a lot of people, and I love to do it. It is not a big deal to me because it is in my heart. Here's a true story: When they called me in to surprise me with the CAREGiver of the Month honor, they did not tell me why, and I was worried I had done something wrong." Needless to say, Nelda was pleasantly surprised.
