  3. Every Day Is Memorable for CAREGiver Joy

A unique experience unfolds each day for award-winning CAREGiver Joy, who has assisted seniors on behalf of Home Instead Senior Care® of Metairie since Jan. 7, 2009. Joy earned her second CAREGiver of the Month honor with the franchise when she was selected as January's winner.

She'll always remember a mother and daughter who were both clients and passed away in the past two years. The 104-year-old mother died in 2014, and her 77-year-old daughter passed away in December 2015. Family members honored Joy in the daughter's obituary. The daughter, who never married, was afflicted by polio at an early age and affected profoundly.

"Four of my clients have passed away in the seven-plus years I've been with Home Instead Senior Care," Joy said, "and I won't forget any of them, ever. I've been asked about memorable days with clients, and I'd have to say each day is special with each client. Some days are more surprising than others."

Joy was stunned when a late client announced she had changed denominational faiths before she passed away recently. "I was happy for her and her family – they were on board with it and made it a big occasion even though they do not share the same belief. Since she was in hospice and unable to leave home, a clergyman came and baptized her," Joy said. "She said it was not a decision made on a whim. She was extremely sharp and had a college degree. She seemed at peace before she passed, so that is the main thing. I was supportive."

CAREGiver Development Specialist Fay Kelting describes Joy as "a very kind spirit," so it is easy to see why Joy's clients want her as a CAREGiver. In fact, a 92-year-old client has been with Joy for seven years. "We are good friends and companions," Joy said. "We laugh together. She is my inspiration because she wants to stay active and tries to get out a lot. I used to take her to water aerobics twice a week. Now we go on every kind of shopping trip you can think of."

Joy added, "The client helps my spirit. She has been good for me, and I have been good for her. Her daughter just retired, and she could be doing the same things I do for her mother, but she does not want to keep us apart. My client's entire family has been appreciative and considerate."

That has been true for all of Joy's clients and their families. "I have learned a lot about senior care in seven years. I had done family caregiving before Home Instead Senior Care, but I don't have any letters behind my name. Every client is different and has different needs, even from one day to the next. Some are more complicated, but I love them all."
