Client Praised Brandy: 'She Is Good as Gold'

To a 92-year-old client, CAREGiver of the Month Brandy was always known as "Gold."

More than having a little fun with Brandy, the client's nickname had a deeper meaning. Brandy was worth gold to the client.

"She was a sweetheart, and I felt thrilled to have her. When she would become apprehensive, I could calm her down," said Brandy, who joined owner Lisa Rabito's award-winning Home Instead Senior Care® franchise in Metairie on April 15, 2013.

The client, who lived with a grandson who held a job, depended on Brandy's assistance from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays for five months until a recurring illness forced the client to the hospital and ultimately to a facility.

Establishing a relationship wasn't as easy with another client. A 76-year-old man, who was residing in a nursing home, did not want Brandy at first and told her so. At the start, he even refused to use Brandy's name, but she kept going back. After a while, Brandy observed that the client was not being bathed, so she inquired with the staff.

"One day, a physical therapist dropped by and asked me, 'Could you help me give your client a bath?' I jumped at the chance," Brandy recalled. "I found that the client had the grittiest feet. I scrubbed them thoroughly and rubbed lotion on them. When I was done, the formerly grumpy client said, 'I like you. What's your name?' After that, we were buddies."

Thereafter, when Brandy came to see the client, the CNAs said, "He's been waiting for you and asking about you. He wants you only." Once when Brandy brought him clean socks, the client said, "Hey, Brandy, thank you!" Reflecting on her work, Brandy smiled and said, "I've always gotten along with the clients or won them over, but that was one of my best experiences. I always have taken care of the elderly throughout my life. My first time was as a family caregiver with my grandparents. With Home Instead Senior Care, I appreciate the flexibility of hours, because I am working two jobs and taking classes."

Brandy, a lifetime learner, has a well-rounded background and has gone back to school to expand her horizons in the culinary arts and become a chef. A check of Brandy's resume:

  • Graduated from nursing school in 1994.
  • Worked as a medical assistant and then for 13 years in hospitals as an LPN.
  • Started cosmetology school in 1999 and began work in 2005 as a licensed cosmetologist.
  • Worked in catering for three or four years, and continues on occasion.
  • Joined Home Instead Senior Care nearly four years ago.

Brandy doesn't plan to leave senior care in her rearview mirror. "I would like to continue to work for Home Instead Senior Care after completing the culinary arts courses in August 2018. I want to keep my hands and my heart in senior care with this good franchise. I would work it around my schedule," she said.

CAREGiver Development Specialist Fay Kelting said: "Brandy is so sweet and loving. Again, as with all of our honorees, we have found an outstanding person and CAREGiver."
