CAREGiver of the Month Jessica thought of a project for her sharp 92-year-old client who lives near the French Quarter and knows nearly every detail about one of America's most popular historic districts. "I told her if I could get drone video of the French Quarter and the surrounding neighborhoods – including hers – I'd have her narrate it as a history tour," Jessica said.
In addition to her vast French Quarter knowledge, the client never stops learning about her beloved Big Easy area. "Her mobility is fairly good. If the weather is nice, she likes to get out of her beautiful 1800s-era home and go with me to Mass at the St. Louis Cathedral, shop for groceries or try new French Quarter restaurants," said Jessica, who loves the client's home that includes a tree-lined courtyard with flower boxes.
"We tried a new restaurant with a gift certificate from the St. Louis Cathedral, where she was a faithful long-time usher and is well-known. She is a devout person, and she has a strong will to keep going there. She is fairly independent and wants to stay that way as long as possible."
Even if the client could give only tours of her house, Jessica said, they would be worth the time. "Before I came to assist the client, I always wanted to go through one of these stylish grand period homes like the one where she lives. There's a lot of history in her home, which originally was a big general store that had third-floor apartments. She's been in the house 50-some years and has had it renovated. It's beautiful with the original wood-beam ceilings, doors and stained glass. Her husband died of cancer 35 years ago, but her children are in this area."

The staff nominated Jessica for CAREGiver of Month because she really took off with the company, and her dependability is impressive," said Fay Kelting, CAREGiver development coordinator for owner Lisa Rabito's award-winning franchise that serves the Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. Jessica, who has been a CNA since 2013, found Home Instead Senior Care on Craigslist. She had been working at a nursing home, but it was a long distance from her home.
"Altogether, my work spans seven hours a day. I alternately work six and seven days a week.
I received assignments for my two ladies last June and July. I helped another lady who died in April 2018. It feels good, because every time I'm with a client when their family members are present, they thank me for taking care of their senior loved ones."
In addition to the 92-year-old client, Jessica serves a 97-year-old wheelchair client who needs help with personal care, including bathing. The client's children are hands-on with their share of the care and take on the responsibilities of meal preparation and medical appointments. Jessica explained: "She is somewhat limited because of strokes and mini-strokes. Like my other client, she is sharp. We talk, joke, giggle and laugh, and I watch TV with her. Despite her challenges, she's at a good place emotionally."
Jessica loves Home Instead and pointed out: "In addition to the nursing home, I've worked in home care for some time, and I've never seen the kind of management Home Instead has.
