  3. As a Toddler, Theresa Showed the Heart of a Caregiver

Theresa’s mother believes her daughter showed she was a natural caregiver at 18 months. How? Theresa tried to change the diapers of an infant sibling. Of course, her mom was right, but who could have predicted Theresa would be an award-winning CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care® years later for compassionately assisting people who are in need?

In announcing Theresa’s CAREGiver of the Month honor recently, Fay Kelting, CAREGiver Development Specialist with Home Instead of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish in Metairie, said: “Theresa is an amazing woman, greatly loved by clients and staff. She is reliable and takes her job very seriously. She works her magic with seniors.”

Theresa, a CAREGiver since July 11, 2013, believes two major events sharpened her ability to help people: an unspeakable family tragedy in 1984 and her decision to take a job to assist mentally challenged adults more than 10 years ago.

“My caregiving really began 31 years ago after my father’s suicide. Mom never recovered from it because her health issues started to occur, and I was there to help her and continue to do so. In addition, I worked with the mentally challenged from 2004 to 2007 and it was a blessing to help them – just as it is a blessing to help seniors now,” Theresa said. “God gave me the gift of love and a servant’s heart.

“My family and I also helped a grandfather; we removed him from a nursing home and took care of him as a team. We had a special tie up until his death in 2003.”

Three responsibilities keep Theresa busy: Assisting her mother, her CAREGiver job and her self-employed job as a licensed hairstylist. “Despite all of that,” she said, “I find time to serve God while remaining active with United Fellowship Full Baptist Church, where Bishop Tommie L. Triplett Jr. is the senior pastor and does a phenomenal job.

My faith in God is the only way to make it through life, and I maintain a healthy lifestyle so I am able to care for others. The lifestyle includes devotional time in the Word, healthy meals, prayerful walks, listening to music and staying positive. I am never overwhelmed.”

Theresa said she is “absolutely happy” with Home Instead because of the way the franchise leadership approaches challenges and treats people. “There is a professionalism with how they go about doing things. They take care of clients plus CAREGivers and their families. They are flexible, and I know because I had to take a leave of absence to help Mom. They have ongoing training, which is helpful. Their meetings are great, and they praise and reward people. They are an awesome company.”
