Home Instead Senior Care is gearing up for its annual Be a Santa to a Senior program to assist seniors in the Toledo community. The donation event raises awareness for the aging population that cannot support themselves during the tough winter months. In 2014, Home Instead collected 394 gifts and donations for seniors in our community.

"Be a Santa to a Senior helps brighten the holidays for local seniors who might otherwise be overlooked this season," said Lauren LaFerriere, Client Care Coordinator for Home Instead Senior Care.

This community service program positively impacts the Toledo-area by providing holiday cheer and gift giving to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the holiday season, are lonely and financially in need.

"While children are the beneficiaries of many holiday programs, people often don't think about the isolated and lonely seniors who need to be remembered as well during this season," added Nicole Madeker, Client Care Coordinator for Home Instead Senior Care.

  • Area non-profit agencies and senior living facilities provide the names of older adults in our community, as well as gift ideas for each senior.
  • Home Instead will display Christmas trees at local establishments including Genesis Village (2429 S. Reynolds Road in Toledo), Central Park West Health Center (3130 Central Park West in Toledo), Chic Happens (5693 Main Street in Sylvania) and Walmart (2925 Glendale Avenue in Toledo) from November 24th through December 11th.
  • Our team is holding a kickoff party for the program on November 24th at Genesis Village.
  • Seniors are recognized when the Home Instead team writes the first name of the participating senior, and their gift preferences, on a BASTAS gift tag. Tags are placed on the Christmas trees at the participating locations.
  • Customers pull tags from the trees and purchase gifts for the seniors from the gift ideas listed on the tags. The gifts and corresponding tags are grouped together and placed under the Christmas trees.
  • The Home Instead team regularly collects gifts and refreshes gift tags as needed.
  • Home Instead teamed up with Children's Discovery Center (3839 Talmadge Road in Toledo) and the students will decorate brown bags donated by Walt Churchill's Market during the week of December 7th. Our team will deliver the gifts to the seniors in the personalized bags.
  • Final gift collection and tree takedown is scheduled for December 11th.
  • Home Instead will distribute gifts the seniors during the week of December 14th.
