In our business of caring for older adults at Home Instead, we see the impact of Alzheimer’s every day. It’s a devastating disease that gradually takes away a person’s ability to communicate and function for themselves. It steals a person’s memories and talents and puts tremendous stress on family and friends.I was interested in learning more about what the effects of this disease, so I recently caught up with a couple of good friends of Home Instead, Lauren Miller Rogen and her brother, Dan Miller, founders of
Hilarity for Charity (HFC). Together, the brother and sister team have partnered with Lauren’s husband, comedian and actor Seth Rogen, to battle Alzheimer’s with the help of a little levity and laughter.
The effort came out of a personal desire from the Miller family to bring light and life into a very difficult area of their lives. Dan and Lauren’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 55, just after the two had seen the disease take both of their grandparents. Dan and Lauren’s mission is to raise awareness for the disease by reminding people that Alzheimer’s is not just an “old person’s disease” but a disease that affects everyone – as it has their whole family.
Four years ago, Home Instead joined forces with Hilarity for Charity to give
in-home care relief grants for folks serving as caregivers for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s. To date, we’ve awarded more than 246,600 hours of in-home respite care through the program.
If you’re caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia and meet the grant qualifications, I encourage you to
apply for a grant. After you watch the video, there are many ways that you, too, can help. You can start by visiting the HFC
website. There, you can donate, learn more about the disease, check out upcoming events and share your own personal Alzheimer’s story.
Join us in turning up the volume and talking about this disease. Together, we can make a difference.
