HOME INSTEAD BURNABY – "OPEN THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION" WORKSHOP AT THE BONSOR CENTREOpen Communication Workshop in Burnaby

Home Instead Senior Care had the privilege of holding an effective communications workshop at the Bonsor 55+ senior centre in Burnaby. In today's time when life is getting busier and technology is reducing the quality and depth of human interaction, it was refreshing to be able to share the message of effective communications between seniors and their ageing children. Something the Home Instead network refers to as the 40-70 Rule.

With aging certain life matters become crucial for resolution but get typically brushed aside since discussing these may involve emotional tension or opposing views. But these life matters do not simply disappear and they normally end up become life crisis if not addressed well in time but families through effective mutual dialogue.

And so, it was refreshing to be in the company of so many engaged participants at the Bonsor 55+ Senior's centre, Burnaby to share the message on opening the lines of communication – on matters such living choices, finances, health decisions, driving and even end of life matters – and to share in the participants' life experiences and inputs around communications within their own families.

Some startling statistics come to light through research:

  • 7 out of 10 families have little to no discussion and fail to plan for these major life matters
  • 68% of the respondents reported to looking for solutions to these matters after a medical emergency i.e. these conversations were forced to happen around a hospital bed (hardly ideal)

Home Instead owner speaks at workshop in BurnabyWhile one cannot expect to resolve these major life matters over a coffee and a single chat, starting to proactively and patiently address these life matters for effective resolution, where the desires and emotions of the ageing senior parents are acknowledged and respected is the step in the right direction that families need to take before it get's too late.
