A tradition of great caregiving means that we take care of our own as well as we take care you and your family. 

We reward our local CAREGivers with CAREGiver of the Month and CAREGiver of the Year awards to show our appreciation for all they do. Home Instead, Inc. also recognizes regional CAREGivers of the Year and one special CAREGiver who shows exceptional dedication is the recipient of the national award — The Mary Steibel CAREGiverSM of the Year Award.

This program inspires CAREGivers to strive for excellence. It creates a sense of pride and rewards their hard work, compassionate care and service to others.

There’s no doubt about it: CAREGiver of the Year Sue McFarlane is a miracle worker.

Sue’s 91-year-old female client has shown incredible progress during her recovery from a brain injury. The client, who fell at her assisted living facility, moved in with family after the severe injury that left her unable to speak. Sue, working with a physical therapist, has achieved terrific results, family members and other observers said.

Sue spends three days a week with her client, working six hours a day. “After a ‘getting-to-know-you’ period, we have been inseparable. We are close. We hold hands,” said Sue, who also was honored as CAREGiver of the Month for October 2016 at the award-winning Home Instead Senior Care® franchise of Birmingham. Sue's story...

For Sue, retirement was too quiet. “I needed to do something for the rest of my life,” she said. “I had helped a visually impaired neighbor who had macular degeneration and whose family had deserted her. I looked after her until she died. At about the same time, I saw a Home Instead Senior Care advertisement. I called Home Instead Senior Care and offered to fill in, not realizing they had so many CAREGivers available. They ended up talking to me about taking a job, and I did. Summing up her time with all of her clients, Sheila said: “I have learned a lot from them. There is a lot of wisdom, as well as a lot of honesty. I learn about their struggles as well as their good times. I try to get to know the clients as well as I can, figuring out their likes and dislikes, so I can make them feel comfortable. ​Donna weaves her compassion into another passion, volunteering for Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that provides homemade blankets to homeless or needy children in the Detroit area. “I’ve been doing it for the past seven or eight years because I really love knitting and crocheting, and helping out those who are in need,” she said. “I average about 30 or 40 blankets a year.” Read more...​

CAREGiver of the Month - Janet Curti

​Janet graduated with honors from college with an information systems degree and worked for a major automaker as a computer programmer before she and her husband began their family of two girls and a boy. While she has an analytical bent, Janet also was cut out of caregiving cloth because she grew up in a tightly knit family in Warren where an aunt also lived with Janet, her parents and three brothers in a small house. “We enjoyed each other. My heart breaks for those who have outlived family and friends,” said Janet, who helped her mother before she died 11 years ago and continues to assist her 87-year-old father who lives with one of her brothers.
