Home Instead Senior Care’s Core Values Drive GrowthAt Home Instead Senior Care, we’re celebrating 25 years of providing highly personalized care for people – dating back to our very first clients in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1994 and continuing today with clients all around the globe. While a lot has changed over the last quarter century, I’m most proud of what’s stayed the same, led by our mission to enhance the lives of aging adults and their families and our unwavering commitment to our core values.

Our story is grounded in those core values. They encompass the soul of our organization. When I look back on the last 25 years, I can easily link everything we’ve done to one or more of our values, which are to honor God in all that we do, treat each other with dignity and respect, encourage growth in ourselves and others and build value in our service to others.

1. Honor God in all that we do
Our company is built on faith and an understanding that we serve a greater purpose. It’s something we’ve embraced from the beginning. In my conversations with CAREGiversSM, they often cite this value as what led them to be a part of our family, and what keeps them here. That’s powerful, especially for CAREGivers who face challenging and emotionally taxing situations every day. It would be easy for them to just walk away, but they’re able to draw strength and inspiration from their faith and honor God in all that they do. And we have 25 years’ worth of their stories to prove it.

2. Treat each other with dignity and respect
From our leadership team and support staff to our franchise owners and CAREGivers, we’ve spent 25 years treating each other the way we all want to be treated. Because of this, we’ve been able to build our business through inspiration. As I’ve written here before, my job isn’t to extract productivity from our employees and send them on their way. My job is to ensure they’re treated in ways that make them happier, more productive, engaged, inspired and loyal. And it works both ways. They have the same impact on me.

3. Encourage growth in ourselves and others
We strive to ensure our CAREGivers are always learning and prepared to handle whatever might come their way. We support and encourage continual development. That’s why we’ve always placed a premium on providing the best possible training programs. And it’s remarkable to see how our approach has evolved over the last 25 years. We started with books and paper, moved on to classrooms and, now, we’re leveraging technology to offer virtual training. Who knows what’s next? Whatever it is, I guarantee we’ll be ready for it.  Our insatiable appetite for learning and growing is key to our success. We must keep evolving and innovating to provide increasingly better care for our clients.

4. Build value in our service to others
Aside from building this company into an industry leader these past 25 years through our highly personalized care, we’ve embraced our responsibility to take a leading role in bringing together the public, private and social sectors to help solve the challenges of an aging global society. We’ve been at the forefront of setting the industry standards and defining what quality care looks like. We’ve been a driving force behind uniting industry players so that we can be aligned on public policy supporting both seniors and caregivers. Now, to help celebrate 25 years in business, we’re aiming to raise .5 million for senior causes funded through the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation. Our founders, Paul and Lori Hogan, kicked it off with a personal ,000 donation, and they will match an additional that we hope will be given by others. Want to be a part of it? Looking ahead, the future looks very bright for Home Instead and the entire senior care industry. As the population continues to age, there will be nearly unlimited demand for the services we offer. The biggest challenge will be our collective ability to meet that demand in a quality way. Because of this, expect technology to play an increasingly larger role in supplementing and enhancing homecare. Also, look for caregiving to elevate to a professional vocation. The traditional healthcare delivery ecosystem will recognize the incredible value that homecare has to offer and will begin to incorporate it into care planning.

There’s no doubt we’ll see a lot of changes in the next 25 years, but I fully expect Home Instead to stay grounded in our mission and commitment to our core values. We must sustain the soul of our company to survive and succeed. How do you see senior care evolving over the next quarter century?

Jeff Huber is President and Chief Executive Officer of Home Instead Senior Care. Huber was named President in 2010 and added the role of Chief Executive Officer in May 2015.  In his position, Huber oversees global operations and directs strategic planning and advocacy initiatives for the franchise network.  

Huber joined Home Instead Senior Care in 1998 as a Franchise Development Manager when the organization consisted of 125 franchises.  Today, Home Instead Senior Care provide more than 60 million hours care annually through more than 1,100 franchises offices in 12 countries.
