CAREGiver of the Month
Goldie Moody’s compassion has been evident since May 1, 2015, the day when she
started with Home Instead Senior Care® of Winchester.
Goldie won a Hand and
Heart Award since joining the award-winning franchise that serves the Northern Shenandoah Valley. It was no
surprise when Goldie was honored as the May CAREGiver of the Month. “To be
honest,” she said, “I don’t go looking for honors. I just want to do my best
job helping others.”
By expertly handling many tasks, Goldie and other CAREGivers not only assist their clients, but they help their families
eliminate worry, reduce stress and re-establish personal freedom.
Goldie talked about one
of her previous jobs before coming to Home Instead Senior Care. “I worked in a
memory-care unit at least 9 to 9½ years in Maine. They needed the help,” Goldie
recalled. “I also worked in a memory-care unit after I came to Virginia, but
after a while I did not feel comfortable there. The shift to Home Instead has
been a good one.”
Goldie is a member of a
24/7 CAREGiver team and has helped a couple for about three years. “The shifts
can be demanding, dementia, confusion, Parkinson’s disease and mobility being among
some of the challenges. Consistency is important, so we try to keep the same
team members. I work with them three days a week. There is a little bit of
everything that goes into caregiving,” she said.
Goldie serves a regular
client, who fought for his country in the military. The client has dementia and
cancer. The client has been on and off hospice status, and Goldie feels honored
to serve the military veteran.
She praised the Home
Instead Senior Care office members, especially singling out the schedulers. “I
don’t envy them because scheduling is such a nightmare,” she said.
“Matchups and consistency
are key because many clients aren’t welcoming to someone they don’t know. I
don’t blame them because it is their home. It’s a big transition to have
someone come into your home. It is challenging, not only for the CAREGiver but
the client as well,” explained Goldie, who said she wants to keep going as a
CAREGiver as long as possible. “No one knows the future, but I will keep doing
it if I can perform my duties safely and efficiently.”
