Laura Builds Relationships, Shares Her Heart with Clients

CAREGiver of the Month Laura Thomas, who donated a kidney to her husband two years ago, also shares her heart with seniors while working for the Home Instead Senior Care® franchise that serves the Northern Shenandoah Valley, including Winchester and 25 other communities.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence she learned about Home Instead Senior Care from friends at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Bunker Hill, West Virginia, where her husband Peter is the pastor.

“I want to put myself in a position where God can use me to help someone. My situation is a relational one: I always think about how I am treating people because I treat them the way I would want them to treat me or my loved ones if the tables were turned. It is like serving the Lord. I call on God all the time for help in serving people,” Laura said.

Laura joined Home Instead Senior Care on April 15, 2013, about 15 months before her husband’s kidney transplant. While serving as a CAREGiver, she came home to administer her husband’s dialysis before the kidney procedure July 18, 2014. “We did not have a hard time finding donor because I was a perfect match. Due to medical issues and surgeries, we had to wait for the perfect time for the transplant,” Laura explained.

Before joining Home Instead Senior Care, Laura developed strong family caregiving skills out of necessity. She administered her husband’s in-home dialysis five days a week for five hours at a time. Adding to that was the balancing of his medications as well as the labs Laura drew and sent into medical facilities.

“We went through a lot,” Laura admitted, “but God got us through it all, and we feel blessed. We just took one day at a time and depended on Him, and we still do because there is no other way. The procedure went well, and we were both ready to leave the hospital after the second day. The doctor was surprised. My husband was better immediately. Everything has worked. It is such a relief. He’s been through 44 surgeries.”

Recruitment & Retention Coordinator Sherry A. Heltzel praised Laura, saying: “Laura is a very kind, calm person. She is a hard worker, and I don't hear a complaint from her at all. She is a Godly person, and it shows in her personality. It was a happy moment when we gave her the news of the honor in person. We are excited for her.”

Laura said the office’s job flexibility and support have made all the difference.

“I feel grateful for the office staff members because they are so good and so supportive. They really go out of their way to help in scheduling and lending an ear and a shoulder. They are what keeps me going. I know each member of the office staff works just as hard as I do,” Laura said.

“The CAREGiver of the Month award reflects on all other CAREGivers because many more of them are considered for the honor and are also equally worthy of it. Just as I do, they have their challenges, too. The timing was perfect because it had been a challenging month.”

When asked what the future holds, Laura replied: “Every day, I receive what I need for that day to live. I don’t worry about things too far off in the future. I toyed with some ideas for seeking a nursing education for financial reasons, but I also kept wondering what good it would do for me and my family and how much time I would miss with them, including grandchildren. Would it be a good investment of time? Probably not. In addition to classes, I would have to continue to work. It’s good to remind yourself of the priorities of life, just live for the day and don’t overthink it. God has made his promises. I am trusting in them.”
