Jerry Waxier did a great presentation on Story Telling and Story Listening as a tool to use with our clients. It's a healing life skill and being "fresh ears" makes listening an act of love. He also discussed overcoming depression with creativity, pets, joumaling, and having a purpose. In the 1950s, Viktor Frankl wrote "Man's Search for Meaning" saying that the reason for depression at any age is a lack of purpose. One way you can help elders find purpose is to help them remember the values and purposefulness of their whole lives.

Think positive and remember that the more hope your clients are feeling, the better your time will be! Depression is a solvable problem and cognitive therapy helps. We CAREGivers are part of the clients' social support system and can be their Story Sounding Board as we develop a healthy curiosity about their story and help them bring it out.

He answered questions and talked about developing icebreaker questions to establish intimacy. The magic of sharing stories creates a bond and if you put it down on paper, you can see the journey better.
