  3. Local Program Delivers Holiday Spirit to Cape Cod Seniors

Everyone deserves to enjoy the warmth of the holiday season, and this year, Cape Cod seniors who are alone or impoverished will be able to do just that.

Sponsored by the Home Instead Senior Care® office serving Cape Cod, the Be a Santa to a Senior® program provides gifts and companionship for lonely and isolated seniors. The program is made possible by the generous support of area nonprofit organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community. The Cape Cod Home Instead Senior Care office has run this program for 12 years, collecting and delivering well over 2,500 gifts for seniors!

"There are so many seniors, right here in Cape Cod that have nothing and no one," said Denise Dever, owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office. "Through this program, we are able to show them that they are valuable members of our community and that people still care."

Home Instead Senior Care partners with 12 Senior Centers in Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Sandwich, Truro and Yarmouth.  Employees from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod and employees and board members from Barnstable County Retirement have also adopted groups of seniors for which to shop.

Participating retail locations will display Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees from November 9th to December 9th that feature ornaments with seniors' first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped (and with the ornament attached) to the store.

Susan Fernald, Marketing and Community Service Rep for Home Instead Senior Care, will distribute the gifts to local senior centers. Friendly visitors will then deliver each gift to those who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.

"We have seen, firsthand, how much this program means to local seniors," Dever said.  "Without it, there would be seniors for whom the holidays would pass without even a visit."
