  3. Thankful for Family Caregivers

We have always found it fitting that the month we set aside to reflect on all the things in life that make us grateful is the same month that we set aside to honor family caregivers. Of course, just like our gratitude, our respect and admiration for family caregivers is ongoing, twelve months a year. Still, it’s nice to have a special time set aside to ensure that they really feel the love. In this, the month when we give special thanks, here are some ways to show a family caregiver that you appreciate all that they do.

• Provide a set time of respite each week. It’s always nice to get an unexpected break, but it’s even more important to be able to count on a certain time each week when you can have a little time to take care of your needs: whether you spend it at appointments, having lunch with friends, at the gym or just grabbing 40 winks.

• Advocate for them. Family caregivers often come under attack from the very senior they’re caring for, from their spouses and children for being stretched too thinly or from siblings who disagree with the decisions they are making. Sometimes, this can wear them down so much, they forget to stick up for themselves… but that doesn’t make it any less difficult. You can help by being in their corner whenever possible.

• Make a point to tell them “thank you.” Even if they know how you feel, it is always nice to hear it. Those two simple words could be the ones they’ve been longing to hear and it’s taken this long for someone, anyone, to say them.

• Just listen. Not every problem has a solution but sometimes being able to vent or talk about it can make all the difference in the world.
