CAREGiver of the Year 2018: Marcia S.

Congratulations to Marcia S. for being named our CAREGiver of the Year for 2018! In total, Marcia has provided 13,000+ service hours to senior clients in her caregiving experience. Marcia_Suprise_CGOTY_1.jpg

Marcia's Story

Marcia was thrown into a family caregiver role at an early age. Due to living in a difficult family situation, she started caring for her mother at the age of five. Despite her childhood tribulations, Marcia refused to be bitter. Rather, she chose to be kind, to show love and to take care of others who were suffering.

Shortly after becoming a professional CAREGiver for Home Instead, Marcia was thrust into the throes of adversity. Her husband and mother both succumbed to cancer. A few short years later — even when that pain was still too fresh — Marcia began her own battle with cancer. To her, it was both life threatening and life changing. “This was a battle that I fought alone but fought hard.”

Marcia_Suprise_CGOTY_3.jpgDuring this personal battle, Marcia made a solemn promise to God and to herself. “Lord, if there are people going through this journey alone, please put them in my path. Place me where I can serve others who need support while going through this difficult journey. Through me, may you guide them, give them hope, offer encouragement and help them find peace.”

Marcia’s health issues had forced her to take a hiatus from serving as a CAREGiver, but one day, she came walking through our office door. Our staff hadn’t seen her for some time.

Marcia came to inquire about some background information to build up her resumé. She stated that she was at a point in her life where she could be working again. Our Recruitment & Engagement Manager boldly asked her, “Why build up your resumé? You walked into our door for a reason, and I think that reason is to start working for us again.”

What a blessing this has been! Battling cancer has made Marcia a stronger CAREGiver. She stated that her suffering has made her understand her clients’ suffering. She can walk into a client’s home and make a connection by leveraging her own life experiences. She can empathize now and better understand the trials and tribulations of those who are going through their own valleys. Marcia_Suprise_CGOTY_4.jpg

Marcia is currently taking care of two clients suffering from cancer. To her, the journey is all too familiar. “I can’t describe it, but I feel their pain. My clients need encouragement and a special touch; they need to know that they are not alone and that they have purpose, much like the purpose I found with Home Instead. I try to make every time they are with me a very special day.”

One such client is Dolores. The minute Marcia met Dolores, she could sense the suffering. Dolores clearly had a lot on her mind that day. Marcia explained, “She held my hand and poured her heart out. We made an important connection. Dolores knew that her time was coming soon, and she felt a comfort in sharing her fears with me. I held her hand as she cried, and it was an unbelievable moment that I will never forget. I was meant to be her CAREGiver that day.”

Marcia_Suprise_CGOTY_2.jpgToday, Marcia is one of our best CAREGivers. We’re fortunate to have her. And so are her clients. But, to Marcia, she views herself as the fortunate one, “This is the most rewarding job in the world, and I am absolutely in love with this. When I tell my clients that they are loved, I truly mean it.  I love them through God’s eyes. I believe there is a reason and a purpose that I am placed with them. Spend my time caring for others is an honor and a privilege. Life is all about reaching out and touching lives, walking beside others who could use a helping hand. God has answered my prayer by helping me survive cancer and by bringing me back to Home Instead. This is exactly where God needed me to be.”

Marcia's caregiving experience was a natural fit for our franchise. Moreover, because we recognize God as our CEO, Marcia found purpose in our strong, Christian-based values system.

Marcia exclaimed, "What a great place! Here, I can help take care of our seniors as well as share love with others — the best of both worlds."
