Did you know that 80% of all strokes are preventable? That’s why we are taking part in May’s National Stroke Awareness Month, to help educate Phoenix area residents on stroke prevention and recognizing stroke symptoms.

Our CAREgivers are trained to help recognize risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes care and diet issues in order to help seniors significantly lower their chances of having a stroke or a repeat stroke.

If you suspect someone you love has had a stroke, timing is key. An easy method to remember is the FAST model:

Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down significantly? Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange? Time: If you observe any of the above signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Be vigilant - note the time when the first symptoms appear because there is an FDA-approved clot buster medication that might help reduce long-term disability for the most common types of strokes.

There have been so many advancements in stroke prevention and treatment in the last several years. To learn more, visit: www.stroke.org, or contact us at 480-827-4343 for resources that can help.
