  3. How to Navigate the Medicare Maze

Can you believe it is already November?  We are about to head into the busy holiday season, and I’m sure you have enough on your To Do list – I know mine is already growing! I would encourage you to squeeze in one more thing. Help your parent or senior loved one prepare for Medicare’s open enrollment period.

Medicare’s open enrollment began two weeks ago, a little earlier than usual. If you need to make changes to Medicare health or prescription drug coverage for 2013, open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7.

Start by sitting down and having a conversation with your senior about their needs. This provides a great opportunity to examine the options together and settle on the best option.

Then visit the Medicare website, which has a fully updated Medicare Plan Finder, with all new 2013 cost and benefit information for health and drug plans. You can enter the drugs and check on the doctors and pharmacies your senior wants to use. This tool will help you develop a list of choices that you can then compare and enroll in.

Medicare is covered in depth in a new video series hosted by Mary Alexander, a certified senior advisor from Home Instead Senior Care. Topics in this series include the components of Medicare, Medicare eligibility and enrollment, types of Medicare coverage, supplemental insurance, and where to find Medicare information.

I think you’ll find the series very useful as you navigate the “Medicare maze.”
