One thing we know for sure is that tax season comes around year after year. Unfortunately so do the would-be scammers who try to take advantage of people’s anxieties about their taxes. In fact, the IRS publishes an annual “Dirty Dozen” list of trending hoaxes for that year.

Sadly, seniors tend to be victimized by many of these.  In fact, studies have shown that senior citizens are more at risk to be targeted by telemarketing scams than other age groups, and fraudulent telemarketers direct anywhere from 56 to 80 percent of their calls at older Americans, according to the National Crime Prevention Council. Mail and internet fraud are also common attempts at robbing seniors of their savings, their independence and their trust in others.

At Home Instead Senior Care of the Southeast Valley, we are firm believers that the best defense against scammers is vigilance, not fear. That’s why our CAREGivers are always on the lookout for scams that target senior clients, and we routinely help them screen phone calls and deal with questionable pieces of mail.

If you are worried that a senior in your life might be vulnerable to scam artists, take this Crime Target Scale assessment to find out possible red flags.
