  3. Be A Santa To A Senior Celebrates The Spirit of the Season

Thanksgiving isn’t for a couple of days yet, but here at Home Instead Senior Care of the East Valley, we’ve been counting our blessings for a while. And one of the ways in which we feel most blessed is being able to call the East Valley home and have the people of this community as our neighbors.

This becomes especially apparent every year during our Be A Santa To A Senior program. Each year, we partner with many local businesses and nonprofits to ensure that seniors who are alone or in need receive holiday gifts. We couldn’t do this without the unbelievably open hearts and generosity of the many wonderful people who take ornaments off of our trees, buy the gifts listed on the ornaments and return the gifts so that we can wrap them and pass them along to a deserving senior.

The need is great. It is heartbreaking how many seniors in our community don’t have the basic things that everyone needs. Their gift requests are so simple: a pair of drugstore reading glasses, a warm pair of slippers, sometimes even household items like toilet paper, but these little things truly mean the world to them. Many times, I have seen a senior save the card or the gift bag from year to year because it is a reminder that someone still cares.

This year, we have partnered with Neighbors Who Care, East Valley Adult Resources, and many other senior care organizations to provide us with the names of needy seniors, and with Walgreens stores across the east valley and Superstition Wal-Mart to host trees. In addition, students from the Mesa Public Schools, as well as numerous Girl Scout troops, will be decorating a holiday card for each gift!

Our Be A Santa To A Senior trees will be up in stores until December 13, and we will host a wrapping party at Neighbors Who Care on Saturday, Dec. 14. We hope you will consider getting involved, either by purchasing a gift or more for a senior, or by joining us at the wrapping party. Also, we encourage you to support the wonderful businesses and organizations that help make Be A Santa To A Senior possible.
