  3. A Day to Show You Care

Just ask any romantic comedy heroine, being alone on Valentine's Day can be a real bummer. It is for seniors experiencing loneliness, too. Or, like, all holidays, it can be something even more heartbreaking: just another day of the year.

For those of us invested in improving the lives of older adults, however, it is a golden opportunity to show them that they're not alone. Here are just a few small (and non-caloric!) things that anyone can do for or with an older person to show the love – on Valentine's Day or any day.

  • Decorate their space: Cutting out hearts out of construction paper or doilies costs nothing, takes just a few seconds per heart and adds cheer to any room.
  • Share a skill: If you have a talent or hobby that you think a senior might enjoy, consider taking a few moments to show them. Conversely, if they have a skill you admire, ask them if they would consider teaching it to you or others.

  • Sow the seeds of love: Planting something together – whether it's one flower or a little container garden – can help seniors stay focused on growth and vitality long after the initial activity.

  • Make beautiful music: Whether it's playing a favorite song or genre via a streaming service or seeing a live concert or band, good tunes are as good for the soul at 80 as they are at 18 – maybe even better.

And, of course, sometimes just spending a few minutes talking to an older person and allowing them to tell you a little bit about them and their lives, can make all the difference in the world.
