  3. CAREGiver-of-the-Year---Joanne

While getting to know Joanne Mason, one can see how important "family" is in her life. Joanne is originally from Long Island N.Y. Her parents and nine sisters and brothers still live in the NY area and another brother lives in New Port Richey, FL. One of the siblings living in NY is Joanne's twin sister. Joanne says that the time and distance has not changed their close bond. Joanne is the mother of three beautiful daughters and a handsome son. She has been blessed with a total of nine beautiful grandchildren.  With a family like this, we can appreciate Joanne's favorite hobby, scrapbooking. Joanne says, "One of the best things about taking up scrapbooking as a hobby is that anyone can do it. I have document many family, life changing events such as parties, first time occasions, grandkids, and family get-togethers."

Joanne joined the Home Instead family in March of 2014. Prior to working at HISC, she was working in a Daytona area mailroom. The unfortunate happened and she was laid off. Joanne decided to go back to school to become a dental assistant and after graduation, realized there weren't many jobs available in her new field. Still looking for something to fill her need to help others, Joanne filled out the application to become a CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care in Daytona Beach. Joanne says that she came in for the interview, was hired, and as the saying goes, "the rest is history". Joanne stated that "I love my job! It gives me the opportunity to experience different cultures and backgrounds. I get the chance to meet different people and see interesting places".

Joanne shares her heart by being compassionate, sympathetic, and dedicated. Joanne says that she has had wonderful clients. She readily shared this story with us of one of her clients. "It was a nice elderly man who had Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. With a lot of patience and assistance, he was able to put a 50 piece puzzle together. This always put a smile on his face and gave him that sense of accomplishment when the puzzle was completed." Another client, she shares, "is feisty, spunky and full of energy. We walk 45 minutes on the beach, one way, and then back". Joanne says that she has been to the beach more with her client than she has been in the 25 years she's lived here.

Building trust with her clients, is second nature to Joanne as she is always reliable and present to every shift. When asked what she liked most about your job, Joanne said, "I love knowing that I make a difference in someone's life everyday by caring, earning their trust, and putting a smile of happiness on their face". Joanne takes the lead by attending in-services and training classes to increase her knowledge and skill level. She has attended classes such as Cooking/Caring/Cleaning, as well as our two part Specialized Alzheimer's series. She's also participated in CAREGiver focus groups, as well as various events held at the office.

Within the last year, the state of Florida has been ravished by two dangerous Hurricane's and at a time where most people evacuated and left the state, Joanne stayed put to provide care for her clients. Before then storms she made sure her clients had water and all the needed supplies. We here at Home Instead, praise Joanne for being a Hurricane Hero. Joanne has developed special relationships with her clients, and one client had this to say, "She helps me with my shower, dressing, and brushing my teeth and then we go to the kitchen and have breakfast. She helps me pick out appropriate clothes for the day. I couldn't live without her. Joanne and I have a very special relationship that has grown and I just really enjoy the time with her." Our office has recently began presenting our CAREGiver of the Month award to our CAREGiver's during their shifts, with the client's permission. When Joanne was presented with her award, her face lit up in excitement. The client was just as excited, feeling that Joanne deserved the honor and more. Upon entering the client's home, our team was greeted by the amazing smell of a home cooked crockpot dinner. The client shared that Joanne prepares a delicious home cooked meal during every shift, and compared her cooking to that of a gourmet chef. This client also raved about Joanne, stating that, "Joanne goes above and beyond every day for me. I'm happy to have her here with me. One of our office team shared that we are very lucky to have Joanne with us and the client excitedly stated, "I know, so am I." To Joanne's clients she's more than a CAREGiver, she's a part of the family.

The Daytona Beach, Volusia County Home Instead Senior Care team is so proud to announce that Joanne Mason has been chosen as our Nominee for our 2017 CAREGiver of the Year.
