Influenced by the love from and for her grandparents, Melissa Hagaman continues to display the utmost respect and generosity towards others. "It's the Golden Rule. All people need help at one time or another. I try to pay it forward," Melissa said. "I treat my clients as if they are my grandparents." Being the nurturing CAREGiver she is, she believes clients have worked long and hard during their lifetime, now it's time for someone to care for them. Melissa states, "The rewards are indescribable." She continues to work with seniors for the joy and to see the smiles on their faces at the end of the day.
Melissa believes that laughter is the best medicine. One client will ask her to, "Tell me a joke! Just make me laugh!" Melissa says that some of her jokes are so corny, the client can't help but laugh. The wittiness and positive attitude that Melissa displays, ensures that she will develop a long-lasting, trusting relationship with her clients.
Melissa, knowing that another client wanted to attend church services, sought out different mass schedules that would allow her to drive the client to and from church each Wednesday. This meant that her client was able to practice her faith, something that was precious to her. Again, going above and beyond, and taking the lead, as Melissa has continued to do in many cases while caring for her clients.
Her willingness to please, not only the clients, but the families as well, contribute to how Melissa shares her heart. At a request from her client's family, "Would you drive our senior loved one to Winter Springs on Thanksgiving Day so that we can spend the day with her?" Melissa stated, "When we got there, they all hugged me and pulled me into their family officially. It felt so good and special. My client is like a grandmother to me." This client tells Melissa, 'You're just like an angel to me.'"
Each year our office participates in our local Alzheimer's Walk. Each year Melissa arranges to have the time off, gathers her children, and walks with the office team. Asked about it, Melissa states that she is honored to walk in her grandfather's memory; it gives her pleasure to remember him and tell stories to her children as they walk.
We are truly fortunate to have Melissa Hagaman as part of our Daytona Beach/Volusia County, Home Instead Senior Care CAREGiving team since October 2013. Her caring heart, dedication and genuine compassion towards Seniors, all contribute to how she is able to build the bond with each of her clients and their families. With a full work schedule, employed by not only one, but TWO Home Instead Senior Care Franchise offices, she brings her own special spirit to clients throughout the area. We are extremely honored to nominate Melissa Hagaman for CAREGiver of the Year 2015!
