Millis, Massachusetts is located in Norfolk counties and is situated an area known as "Metro West". Millis is located approximately 19 miles southwest of Boston. Initially settled in 1657, Millis was a part of Medfield. Later, with growth, Millis became a part of the newly incorporated town of Medway. In 1885 the area was incorporated into the town of Millis.
Millis was known for its railway system, a rail that connected the small Metro West towns to the larger towns of Dedham, Boston and Cambridge. The train system was known as the Bay Colony railroad. It was later merged with the MBTA Commuter Rail. Millis was also a town which granted the construction of the Hartford and Dedham Turnpike to be built through the town. Today this route is Massachusetts Route 109.
Perhaps as a result of the rail and road systems, mills and other industries soon were established in Millis. These industries included a bell foundry, both an organ and organ pipe manufactory. Millis was home to Herman Shoe Company, providing most of the boots used in both the Spanish-American and World War One, as well as Clicquot Club which distributed the first brand of Ginger Ale. It was later bought out by Canada Dry. Today Millis is a bedroom community for the larger towns of Milford, and Needham, Dedham and the cities of Boston and Cambridge.
The 2000 US census listed the total population of Millis at 7,902. The 2010 projected population is listed at 7,412.
